The Chastanet Factor

Excellent points by Mr. josie who has grown as a thinker over the past few years.
There has always been a colour issue in St. Lucia when it comes to politics and too many times you get the sense of resentment of Mr. Chastanet because he "passes as white" and was born with the proverbial silver spoon.

Even with Kenny you hear that yes he is a Barnard (and therefore part white) but he is OK because he really did not grow up with much money.

At least with Chastanet we do not have the problem as with 90% of electoral candidates in St. Lucia in that they are all out to fill their pockets on the public dime and see politics as the way to get this done.

With Chastanet all pockets are already filled and and he at least passes that first hurdle in qualification to be a political leader. At least he is for the people and not just filling his pockets.

We could argue about his other attributes or failings but on this count he gets a passing grade.

Could we now get a DeVaux or Bergasse to toss their hat into the ring or is that too much of a shock to the system?

It is understandable by the way that Richard Fredericks and Rufus Bousquet would be fighting down Chastanet and not want him to run in Soufriere.
The fact is that if Chastanet were to win he would be best placed to replace King as Prime Minister. Additionally Chastanet would have no qualms about getting rid of both of the two persons above if they were to step out of line.

Interesting times ahead.

If Chastanet were in the lineup of candidates for the UWP in 2011 or early 2012 it would also extensively diminish Dr. Anthony's significance to the SLP (in the eyes of the electorate) and almost guarantee that King would become PM in his own right. As it is Anthony is fighting an uphill battle in the perception of his leadership qualities.

Chastanet is the only one with the "graitas" of a Dr. Anthony and he far outshines all the potential heirs on the SLP side.

Chastanet running Soufriere would be an major advantage for the UWP and it wil be interesting to see if the Fredericks, Bousquets, Montoutes would cut of their noses to spite their faces.

Ding Dong the decade from hell (00s) is gone. Happy New Year all.

Allen is a son of the soil so I support him 100%, I wouldn't accept him as much (for political office) if he was born somewhere else and that's the only prejudice I have.

Anonymous said...

A senseless and illogical argument about not being born in St. Lucia.

Sir John George Melvin Compton was born in Canouan in the Grenadines and there was no one more "lucian" than mate. Also no one more successful at bringing the best out of St. Lucia.

Would you rather Compton than Anthony, King, Louisey, Lewis - who were all born in St. Lucia ? Lewis was so pathetic I almost could not remember his name and had to think of his uncle to get his name !

George Mallet was born in Panama and did stalwart duty for St. Lucia.

Time to stop those dumbed down arguments.

Imagine if we had a brilliant potential Prime Minister born in Canada of lucian parents who were studying in that country . Are we going to say he/she is not eligible?

Anonymous said...

Chastanet has a good chance of winning in Soufriere and for a historical reason. Soufriere prior to Walter Francois had the interesting distinction of changing parties every elections.

For the past three cycles they have gone with the St. Lucia Labour Party. As far as I can see they still keep on complaining about the same problems for the past 12 years.

I think they could easily be convinced that there is "Time for a Change."

Quite frankly except for denying the Soufriere electorate the fruits of the Taiwanese largesse, I cannot think of what Dalson has done for the people of Soufriere.

Anonymous said...

If you wern't born or grew-up in the country then you shouldn't lead it, plain and simple.
Compton was very partial and he didn't care much for the whole country, perhaps it was the fact that he wasn't born there, he had the same colonial mentality so enough of that.

This too shall pass! You don't even know what is about to spring out in the New Year. Stay tune, it won't be Chastanet or Kenny.

Anonymous said...

Nothing will spring up at the start of the New Year. This is not to put down anyone but just a fact.

For too many years I have see the wannabees coming out of the poltical woodwork and they have all fallen flat on their faces - particualrly the ones who spend so much time telling everyone they are coming.

The one possibility that may change the landscape is someone from outside of the present MPs coming in to take over the political leadership of the St. Lucia Labour Party. e.g. Hillaire or possibly Mario Michel.

The rest are just hot air.

Anonymous said...

What is so special about Mario and Hillaire? How do you know they are better that than what we have? Give us some proof?

Anonymous said...

Hillaire has evil eyes, I don't trust him. Anyway the SLP has been sentenced to wonder the wilderness for a few terms, they're lost and can't seem to find their way back.
It's KARMA for trying to outsmart the people, we're not stupid.

Anonymous said...

SLP is 100% better than anything we have so far in St Lucia, it will only take fools to leave the likes of Guy joseph and king, Redrick and tucker, Mon day see and easy carl, spida and ass in james, mar curse and the mono of Dennery to bring St Lucia backwards as they are doing.

Anonymous said...

The St. Lucia Labour Party is a political organization with a strong base that is comitted to that entity. The United Workers Party also has that attibute relative to their standing with St. Lucia's electorate.

The short, medium and long term direction at any one point with either party has to do with its leadership. Further the philosophy and policies of either party is also a reflection of its leadership. A perfect example is that within a vey short period of time the UWP lost its labeling as a conservative party (which served St. Lucia well under SJC)and simply became an unlabeled grouping led by a reasonable leader but a set of venal support staff. If tomorrow the UWP was formed for the first time with certain elements of the present leadership it would be laughed off the island. It survives only because of the loyalty built up under the OLD Guard of Compton, Lansiquot, Mallet, etc. Just look at the regard with which Mallet is treated.

The same fate is reflected in the ambivalance towards the SLP where there is no confidence in the Political Leader or the "dek dek" Deputy Leader or other MPs. Again the SLP now is fundamentally a party of old loyalties looking for leadership.

Therefore neither party is fundamentally wrong even though the SLP does still have certain remnants of a outlook that has failed the Caribbean miserably. In his own way Compton put words to that failing.

Leadership is what is required today in St. Lucia for both parties. Unfortunately there is no setting of leadership example in any sphere of our lives whether from politicians, businessmen , the legal eagles or the churches.

The topic of Chastanet obviously resonates because we have failed with the standard fare, so maybe St. Lucians are looking for something different.

Real change that you can trust is on its way!

For the sake of stirring up the hornet's nest here are a few predictions for 2010.

The St. Lucian economy will improve during 2010 but the American economy will just sputter along.

A number of big projects will commence.

Tourism will “dodge the bullet” with a big crime issue.

A small scale hurricane will cause problems between August –September.

Both the United Workers Party and the St. Lucia Labour Party will undergo some transformation in the leadership but not necessarily at the top. Stephenson King will in fact cement his role as Political Leader of the UWP while Kenny Anthony and his supporters wil be under increasing pressure to revitalize the party.

King will have to fire one member of Cabinet who is a sitting MP.

There will be a by-election in one constituency.

There will not be a General Elections.

Third party supporters and political wannabees will “make some noise” but quickly disappear off the radar.

Fidel Castro will die.

Tiger Woods will win no majors.

Brazil or Spain will win the World Cup.

You could predict all you want it is your right, but i disagree with you on one point. People do not predict death of other people, especially if you are not privy to the the person medical records, you should leave that to God or the doctors. Nobody including you knows when they will die.

Anonymous said...

Newsweek also predicts Castro's death....Good riddance to those dictators, no tears from me and millions of others.

Anonymous said...

These millions of bias Americans, the dictators are helping thousands of us poor St Lucians, so get you mind straight. If you do not what help the dictator is giving us, ask me i will tell you. How much help your favorite paper is giving us? You should never predict the death of other people because you might die before the person. That is a lesson you must learn.

Anonymous said...

Clearly we have a marxist/socialist/liberal who is upset that a murderer like Castro might die one day.

Anonymous said...

We must not forget also a womanizer worth hundreds of millions stolen from the people of Cuba, etc, etc.

Anonymous said...

Clearly we have a ?????? who is happy that Castro will die one day and he or she will live forever.

Anonymous said...

These people have no idea of the atrocities that Castro and his drones have carried out.

Anonymous said...

I agree Castro has done a lot of bad things, but let us look around carefully and we will surely see that Castro is the not the worse amongst western leaders. He have not done half the amount of atrocities they have done. Check yourself and you will tell me the truth. Ponder carefully.

Anonymous said...

So are you justifying what he did?

Anonymous said...

Can't you read and understand? I said i agree Castro did alot of bad things, did you read that line? My point is, why are we only talking about Castro when we have other leaders, under or nose doing worse under the pretense of democracy. Tell me what Castro is doing that is so wrong?

Anonymous said...

Find out on your own.

Anonymous said...

If Castro is so bad and is doing so many wrong things, then St Lucia should not take any help from him. We hypocrite. Our so called ministers should not be traveling to Cuba to get help from a tyron.

Anonymous said...

If we accept help from Castro we are just as bad as him, and we are justifying his actions.

People let us see thing things in reality, no new third party can win a seat in St Lucia in the near future. The only party who will be to a disadvantage if a third party come into being is the uwp and the SLP will win all the seats.

Anonymous said...

You should be happy a third party is going to make the SLP win the elections. The only party likely to suffer damages are the UWP. SLP is safe.

Hehehhehe

Anonymous said...

I predict the SLP won't be able to find 17 credible candidates.

I predict PM King, Mr. James, Ms. Compton, Spider, Mr. Richard Frederick, Ezekiel Joseph,Guy Joseph and Marcus are all going to win their seats. The party already have 9 sure seats and more to come-Chastanet, Guy Mayers, Rufus, Estaphane and even Mondesir. You hear that? Yes I am sure you heard that. Who you all have in place capable of beating any of our candidates? It is 3 years since the last elections and up to now you all can't find people to run for your SLP. All you all do is run your mouth and think this is what is going to make the SLP win. Mark my words. SLP already dead. Your red eyes just can't see it.

Anonymous said...

U get the award for being a delusional, mentally hindered fool!!!!!!!

Eh, Eh! Look at this. SLP supporters getting so mad because somebody say their party are going to win the next elections. The person showed us how the UWP is going to win. Instead of getting mad tell us who your candidates are?

LOL

Anonymous said...

It is three years and SLP is only running their mouths, but what has uwp who is in government done for the three years we are paying them with our tax dollars? De fellows you mentioned, is that what we deserved in St Lucia? Guy joseph, King, Ass in James, Ass t Fan, Fed rick, Spida, Tucker, Man day zee, Easy cal, mar curse etc, etc. Who died and left these lapo fellows for us. I an confident St Lucians will not make a mistake twice.

Anonymous said...

Don't bother yourself looking for an intelliegent answer from this angry and hateful mob called the SLP. It's a party out of sync with itself, the public and reality. Even fools know that they are bankrupt of ideas and candidates. The longer the government stalls the election the happier they are. They were not ready last year and still aren't ready this year. It's a party in transition of WANNA BE government officials. It's a pity that their " ACCOUNTANT IN CHIEF " won't let the imbeciles in on the parties real state of readiness.

Anonymous said...

You have got to be kidding me! If u are so confident of the UWP impending victory what is all the hoopla surrounding what an SLP says? If I were u pro-SLP comment be the least of my worries. And arent SLP's imbeciles, like u said? Why fret? I know, because deep down, the threat of defeat looms above the UWP's heads and there aint a thing u morons can do about it!

Anonymous said...

What looms? Kenny's defeat? Oh yes, I almost forgot. We " morons" are very experience at defeating imbeciles.

I know there are die hards uwp who will never change dor matter what, and there are thousands of people like that. SLP won 16-1 and uwp still got these thousands of votes. So there is will always be uwpeees. But people who could really think will never vote for a none performing government, like the uwp is in St Lucia.

Anonymous said...

People can see the difference between SLP and UWP and that's all they need, they saw that 3 yrs ago.

Anonymous said...

What you all jerks have done is to awake us flambeaus. now we are no longer asleep there is hell to pay for SLP.

Anonymous said...

The diifference between the SLP and UWP is staring us all right in the face. Some of us just choose to ignore it! Pray tell! what has flambeau done since they got into office: they hastened Sir John's demise, they fought among themselves and pretended that all was well and that the economy had never been so vibrant. The SLP on the other hand during their time built loads of schools, police stations, firestations, fixed roads, built stadiums, etc etc etc. The facts are there for all to see. The SLP, with all it's flaws is a far better alternative. Those who delude themselves into seeing otherwise are brainless fools.

Anonymous said...

You right, i have strong confidence that St Lucians will make the better choice at election time. The few die hard uwpees is trying to distract us but that will not work. these people do not like St lucia all thet can see is Flambeau, flambeau, flambeau. I have asked many times, and none of them have answered me. What has this government has done that is so good in the three years we are paying them, that would deserve them re election?

Anonymous said...

First of all.

Sometimes you have to wonder that if this is the best blog that persons can comment on with regard to St. Lucian affairs and the best we can do are SOME of the ignoramuses who have posted above, then our educational system is in serious trouble and we have seriously psychologically sick people representing a portion of our voting public. No wonder we produce the politicians who represent us in Parliament.

A) We have serious problems with the kind of persons who now form our Government and this Administration is woefully missing targets. There are also good ones who due to “politics” are accepting the rest of the “riff raff” who are their colleagues.

B) The Opposition were in power for a period of 9 years prior to 2006 and in that time they bankrupted two generations of St. Lucians, had no real growth to show for this generational theft, showed no sustainable developmental mode, dirtied the body politic with their vindictiveness, lied about accountability and transparency (Rochamel, et al), failed abysmally at dealing with internal security and generally failed at leadership and improving the quality of life of St. Lucians.

In spite of (A) above we refuse to go from the UWP to the SLP because of (B).

Instead of bloggers in different words simply indicating “I like/love/hate SLP” or “I like/love/hate UWP” can we come up with analysis based on what is happening in constitutiencies, Ministries – Finance, Education, Foreign Affairs, etc. What is happening with the Chamber of Commerce, are there any churches doing good stuff on the ground worth mentioning, how do you think Assou Square is going, what are our economic possibilities for 2010 ? What is the Opposition doing for the country or constitutiencies ?

And the commentary possibilities are endless unless of course you are a UWP or SLP hack waiting for your handout..

Anonymous said...

HA!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Crap! crap and more crap. UWP crap!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Tick tock, tick tock. Flambeaus are in for a shock! Jump high, jump low, UWP just has to go!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

There is no shock there, all uwpees know they will not last more than five years.

Anonymous said...

In responce to the previous posts I quote from above.

"And the commentary possibilities are endless unless of course you are a UWP or SLP hack waiting for your handout."

Based on the responce not only are these hacks waiting for their handouts but they are also dumb hacks.

What is wrong with u people? Did any of u not read the article? What am I saying? Just like us to read and not understand. Judging from the comments it goes to show how politically divided St Lucia really is! UWP hacks please be quiet. Bickering wont cause a landslide in your favour. SLP hacks sit back and judge. Make an informed decision based upon that judgement. Stop the fussing and fighting for once! There is nothing to fear, really. At the end of it all the best party will prevail.

This article by Mr. Josie I found interesting on many fronts.

Even though I knew of Mr. Josie from the 1970s I never assessed him in his own light but merely as an adjunct to George Odlum. Even after that point he did not appear to me to be of any particular significance but merely part of the political noise of the 90s ,etc.

He surprised me during the 2006 election cycle when he phoned in to a number of radio programs and on one or two occasions showed a level of insightfulness that caught me unawares and a certain level of appreciation took hold. To date though there is still vagueness to Mr. Josie that I have attributed to a lack of intellect, laziness or both.

I must admit though that I have appreciate a number of his articles though I am afraid he has shown himself to be just another of our socialist/liberal brethren who have led our people in the Caribbean down the garden path. No amount of intellectual firepower or smarts can alleviate that problem.

I remember one particular article that hit the nail squarely on the head but it was apparent that (a) he did not recognize the basis for his observations and (B) philosophically did not have the capacity to follow through with the implementation of correct policies.

I quote from Mr. Josie’s article:
“The present miniscule ideological difference which exists between the two political parties, will pale into further insignificance ….”

Whereas he sees this “paling into insignificance” as a good thing I contend that this is precisely why we are failing in the Caribbean to improve the quality of life of our citizens. The prevailing socialist philosophy of the 70s combined with the failed American liberalism absorbed through the American media, academia and Hollywood has corrupted our people and in particular out political class.

Our political class have no idea as to the effective role of Government in our lives and simple borrow, tax and spend us into oblivion with each 5 year cycle.

The narcissistic ruling intellectual class from which we draw our politicians (except for the occasional snake oil salesman) are solely concerned with their own self aggrandizement and the filling of their pockets. They honestly believe that they have all the answers because they have been pampered throughout their academic careers by their families as they have climbed that totem pole.

They view voters as merely mendicants who can be bought and paid for by fancy words and promises of footpaths.

Philosophically they are now all cut from the same socialist/liberal cloth even if only by osmosis because clearly none of them even pretend to think about why they take the course of actions that they do while in power.
Sir John Compton was conservative by nature and this philosophy led to the Promised Land – or at least to it periphery.

Mr. Josie hit upon an important point about the miniscule ideological differences between the parties. Unfortunately it is not a cause for celebration but an acceptance of how hard the task is for our people to gain salvation.

Anonymous said...

And hello headless rooster. U and King are both morons. Get a freaking life, psycho freak!

Anonymous said...

Which promise land did Compton Philosophy took us to? Did you live in St Lucia throughout Compton ruling? Compton was nothing but a bluff to the St Lucian people, that is one of the reasons why Oblum and josie became so powerful in St Lucia political history. If Odlum, josie and their group was not so stupid Compton would have vanished from the political history of St Lucia since 1979.

Thommo said...

Mr. Josie is making a pitch for his man, Chastenet and I have no problem with that but it is the political, and socioeconomic realities of Soufriere, among other factors, that will determine the outcome of the election there.

How much is the UWP willing to pony up to buy this constituency. How much are the Taiwanese willing to put up to shore up a victory for Chastenet in the efforts to maintain diplomatic relations with St. Lucia to bolster their claim for self determination and freedom from China.

I strongly believe that any capable person in any constituency who has a record of service in that constituency, and was born and bred in that constituency should be given the vote over any carpet bagger.

Guys like Sam Augier, and the current representative, Harold Dalson, have a record of community service in Soufriere and no one can fault the people of Soufriere for reelecting Harold Dalson if they so desire.
If Dalson works the seat like he should with the backing of the party he should win handily.

I do not fault Chastenet for wanting to offer his services to the people of St. Lucia and neither his money or his pedigree sould be the determining factor in him winning or loosing.

I know he will do a heck of a job as a campaigner promising the people of Soufriere that he'll make their deprived community the mecca of the St. Lucia tourism industry. He is there now let him show what he can do other than offering a lap top.

He should be trying to make some serious in roads into unemployment in Soufriere. He should have advised his administration that firing these tour guides would have serious implications on his election success in Soufriere. Unfortunately he will suffer the consequences of the bone headed move by his government to deprive these poor people of their livelihoods.

To Mr Dalson he must be seen as a uniter in Soufriere not a divider. He must continue to work closely with the clubs and community organizations and seek ways and means to support them in their fund raising efforts.
Continue to agitate for the people of Soufriere in Parliament.

Work closely with law enforcement in the community to reduce the incidence of crime against locals as well as visitors.

Make his presence felt in the community. Work with the churches so that they can formulate plans to get the young people involved in constructive activities.

Of course there will be people in the community who will try to undermine him and make him appear as an abject failure, but he must be prepared to countervail that onslaught.

Anonymous said...

Thomo, very good piece, but one thing you said i have a little disagreement with is. You sad Chastanet should advice his government about firing of the poor tour guides, but he Chastanet was in the center of the firing of these people as minister of tourism.

All this government do is to travel the world and ignore our domestic affairs. Instead of Chastanet and the government put in place security in St Lucia at the domestic front, for the country and it tourism etc. All he does is to travel to Miami to bargin as he called it, the first he went with Mayers, they did not make any head way, now he is going with his partner the super intellect the great hon. Guy Joseph. What a joke, now we know the country finances is used to to squander on joy rides. Guy Joseph can speak neither english nor spanish which is widely spoken in Miami all he could do is to smile, use his favorite words "cost over run" and keep his cost over run on the Allan Bousquet highway a secrete. What can Guy say or do in Miami, when every school child in St Lucia laugh at him when he speak his broken english? Guy ministry does not pertain to tourism or security. We have another big delegation leaving the country for 5 days again to Cuba. 2 ministers, the PM and his wife one doctor and a press secretary on another joy ride. The same uwp who use to call Cuba communist, they have won elections by associating the opposition with that devil regime, now that same uwp and the PM for that fact is taking his wife to that dangerous country. Can you imagine that? With crime over running our once sweet country, we are paying our government instead to take care of our domestic affairs, to travel the world.

Anonymous said...

I think you're jealous cuz you don't get to travel that much.

I pay for my own traveling, but why we all have to pay for these useless people traveling, with moneys that should be taking care of our country, like crime, roads, schools etc. We did not elect the PM wife so how comes she is traveling on holidays on our money? There is nothing to be jealous about what is happening in St Lucia today, it is a crying shame.
