I frowned on the newspaper for this non story but the content of the blogs indicates how truly shallow we are! Having said this, I know the country has significant talent uninterested in running for party political office.

It is just natural that Labour hacks will lash out at the two gentlemen for their heart decision. He who feels it knows it. Kenny, Leo and company have the reputation of using and dumping people after winning elections. I was at the SLP convention after the 2011 elections when Leo said that he is not interested in losers. I wonder what he thinks of his cabinet of ministers. They are all losers. Herman and Peter, you have made the right move. What we need at this juncture is a more level playing field that is inviting to people of talent and energy but are curtailed by the tremendous financial costs or have limited choices of Party planks/platforms that speak to their strengths /causes/ national goals/interests.
Election reforms should go as far as establishing a national fund to support those who win local go ahead elections to play in the bigger dances. This could be based on say a college financial aid formula or slide scale
Lets say the brilliant contributing columnists Max Johannes or John Peters have secured the requite sum total of petitions to be placed on ballot to run against the very rich leader of a certain party .
First the reform law will have limits on actual air time ads TV/Radio/print
If a candidate is part and parcel to any estate worth a certain figute they must use their own sources including contributions b ut caps and full disclosure all around
The working middle class aspirants may use private funds too if they have a significant backer (subject to the caps disclosues for the rich candidate.
However, if the more financially humble aspirant chooses he may opt to qualify for the public voting fund and its cystal clear guidelines.
Leveling the playing field (financially) allows as many sheep as goats t/ independents as party scions/ dogmatics as pragmatics
-to enter the election fray.
The public will get their $ worth in viable choices
Talent/ideas will wrestle front and center while roro and mudslinging fades away

In my view; if Kenny Anthony could have gone to the great lengths which he did to accommodate the so-called Internal Security Advisor; former Police Commissioner; he could have utilized the values which Hermangild could have brought to the Police Force.
