I am surprised by the former AG assertion that Taiwan is not a renegade province. It is an internationally agreed fact that modern day Taiwan (Republic of China) came to be in 1949 following the defeat of the Kuomintang (KMT) at the hands of General Moa and the Communist Party during the Chinese Civil War. The KMT, led by Chiang Kai-shek, retreated from Mainland China and moved their seat of government to Taiwan – thus making it a renegade province. It should also be noted that an integral element of a state is Sovereignty. The recognition of states neighbours to its claim to rule over its territory. Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations and has no formal diplomatic relations to most of its neighbours.
I am at a lost why a government in the name of the People of St. Lucia will severe ties with the most populous country on the globe, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and soon-to-be Super Power – for a renegade province that will soon be reunited to Mainland China. I will write on the internationally agreed one – China policy in another posting.
