I am a teacher myself and believe that children should be punished. They should never be allowed to get away with the wrong things that they do. I believe it is because of us being to lenient with them our society is plagued with all those social ills. Like the architect said it worked for him and most definitely worked for me to. I am sure it worked for the writer of this article as well. I believe that sending out a letter of this nature to the press is wrong. Allow the Ministry to deal with the problem or the teachers'union for that matter. It is utter disrespect for authority to make this public while at the same time pleading to them to take action. If we want to be treated like professionals we should behave in that manner. We are in this together and the only way we can over come the trials that we as teachers face on a daily basis is certainly not by going to the press but rather by remaining a united front. We need to lead those of our collegues that are straying, back to the flock. We need to pick up those who have fallen as well as those that are falling. I don't believe that it is only the teachers in question that are affected by this. All of us are.We as teachers need to keep our guards up cause our fellow colleages are bring us down.

Some people should be in anger management classes, receiving therapy to help them overcome the traumatic childhoods that led them to condone child abuse as a virtue; rather than giving advice to the effect that they benefited from child abuse and so should others.

The sustained fascination and penchant of leading members of this society for cruel and inhumane punishment of children, while praising its supposed benefits, is definitely fascistic in nature and it leads all the way back to our origins as a slave-based society where conformity was essential for survival. We all know that fascist/slave societies seek to produce conformist serfs that gladly do the biddings of their masters. And the best place to start is with the children. As the letter writer points out, this tradition of breaking-in young slaves continues up to this day in our school system.

Thus, the difficulties experienced with discipline in this society are not caused by lack of punishment, but rather by the natural refusal of freedom loving human beings to be forced by self-proclaimed authorities into subservient roles in our supposed postcolonial era at the beginning of the 21st century!

Authoritarian personalities yearn to be told what to do, for them cruel and inhumane punishment is welcomed as a sign of love. Such persons desire that others be equally submissive, and they will use force if necessary to coerce submission in others. These are the kinds of people that are the foundation of fascist societies. However, we are now living in the post-fascist era, where freedom is our highest value.

The bottom line is that no one has a right to impose their perverse values on others. There are many more architects and others that grew up to be good and happy people without the need for cruel and inhumane punishment. On the other hand, we'll find with certainty that our most maladapted citizens, those that engage in violent crime, will most likely have a history of child abuse from parents and teachers alike.

The letter writer has done our society a great service. Our long tradition of cruel child abuse in the name of authority must be brought to an end. The abusers must be stopped, named, shamed and punished. This is important not only for the individuals concerned but also for the society as a whole as we struggle to find our place in freedom, peace and economic prosperity in the global society.

This teacher has chosen to listen to the voice of good conscience and break the shameful silence. We can only hope that more such brave souls will step forward to help right the wrongs that make us into such a dysfunctional society, where our leading members claim child abuse to be a virtue and thereby stint our growth and help ensure that the legacy of slavery remains thriving.

I don't think anyone is condoning child abuse. What I believe is said is that there are wrong and right ways of doing things. The write has choosen to deal with things the way he or she wanted. Why then ask for the help of the ministry? Did he/she forgot they existed before going to the press? I don't want anyone to get me wrong. I am not in favor of anyone abusing any child. It is wrong.

Teacher want children to do things the right way most if not all of the time. They to should do the same; practice what they preach. The person who commented by saying the writer did society a favour is not a teacher and does not and will never understand the depth of what this teacher has done. It's only now slavery will start. Not only for those guilty teachers but for the innocent ones as well. We all we pay for the sins of others. I resent that.

I feel though for those kids who have to endure treatments like these from teachers. I just feel the situation should not be made public before the authories concern at least attempted to resolve the problem

Virtually all abusers fear publicity, especially those that masquerade as benevolent authorities. It is their standard refrain that they must first be given an opportunity to change their behaviour, before being publicly exposed.

The fact of the matter is that the abuse continues unabated unless the abusers are publicly named and shamed and thus forced by higher powers to cease their abusive behaviour. No amount of pleading or begging in private ever gets abusers to desist from their sadistic pleasures. In fact, the more you beg them, the more invincible they feel in their god-like roles.

The abuse of these children has long been known to those in a position to change the situation for the better. We have a culture of child abuse in St. Lucia, and that is no secret.

The teacher has done us a favour by breaking the code of tolerance regarding child abuse in this society.

Protecting those in authority from public embarrassment when they abuse their powers is not something an open society should tolerate, as this only serves to encourage authoritarianism and give succour to the abusers.
