Pelay LIAT 1974 started operations in a huge debt. There is no way any management would have been able to turn Liat around, starting from that position. They now have to take the tough decisions, which may not be popular to some.
LIAT could not have started without debt and LIAT will remain in debt unless some tough decisions are taken to eliminate unprofitable routes and to eliminate ticket offices. Why does LIAT have to maintain a ticket sales office if sales can be made through travel agents or on-line? Can teh unions understand that? it's one things to try to keep jobs but it's another thing to ignore waste.
Anonymous #1, I agree with you and if you read my article again, you will see that I said they started putting the large debt on themselves long before 1974. As for Anonymous #2, again I do not say that closing the Offices is not a good move. What I am saying is that it is regrettable and this should be the last resort. For example. I suggest that they do not do any business with the Travel Agents which will save millions in commission fees, and instead keep the offices open for at least a while longer. However, you do not seem to agree with that. But sooner or later that too will have to go, for again I made that prediction in 1999 when I sang about the USA's pending recession and the fact that Computers would put many people out of work in this century. Thanks for both of your comments.
The situation with LIAT started with the original british investors who used a purchasing company that they owned in Miami, to to suck Liat of it,s funds. Then they were able to get the british gov't to convince Compton and Bird to purchased Liat, which were heavily in debt. At that time Liat didn't own a plane. In return JC and Bird got Halcyon days.
