Fisherpeople should form a cooperative and package frozen fish for entry and sale to Miami, Brooklyn, and Connecticut.

We have the huge Caribbean sea all around us and the Caribbean islands have not turned it into an industry and major export item for the rest of the world - like Chile and Iceland, for example.
That's why our islands can't do better than they're doing right now.
As a people, we are simply not adventurous, independent thinking, cooperative, well organized, and hard working enough.
These are exactly the kinds of enterprises all our governments should be heavily supporting: not just building more and more airports and hotels.

To Anon #1 and #2 ... The fishermen ARE a CO-OPERATIVE. It is there for them to work together according to their by-laws.

Unfortunately, as is with most people who WORK TOGETHER there is always discontent and "nay-sayings", and those who think only of their pockets at the end of the day.

For the FISHERFOLK CO-OPERATIVE to do well, they will have to work TOGETHER - and should employ marketing and economist strategists (human resources) who can help them to market and price their goods properly, and eventually gain to THEIR benefit. Help them to make a plan. There are agencies on the island who can do that for them, at no direct cost to them.

But, can you change the mindset of some people just like that? No. Unfortunately, they prefer to remain in their archaic, day by day, dull routine, and expect the gold to fall in their lap - with no innovative skills, and/or, forethought of how to make their living better.

As for the fuel they need for their boats - again, they should be pooling their resources to purchase fuel at a lower rate - and liaise with the petrol dealers for a price break. That is what a CO-OPERATIVE is for ...

After reading the comments ... I thought I should add, that for a fact, there are but a few fisherfolk who are forward thinkers, and hardworking - but unfortunately have to remain backwards because of the greater balance who show no innovative skills. Sad, but true.

They are a working group, but need MORE guidance to make their daily living better.

Most people in St. Lucia think small. They see only St. Lucia as their only market. Tell them that and they tell you that you are arrogant. How with all your education you dare tell them what to do. That word arrogant will continue to bite our posteriors for years to come, as we wallow in our poverty and ignorance.

The like-minded people should form their own new cooperative. But then again, it is government's fault for not creating an organisation that can drive the coalition of the willing to higher heights. Don't you bother your little head with dem UWPs. Some of their ministers en go to school too much. Some have only just one CXC, yes. Their heads hard. They can neither think inside nor outside the box.
