While I agree it is the right of an employer to decide whether or not they want a tattooed or pierced person in their establishment; and I agree that one should not go over board with the tattoos and piercing especially if you are seeking gainful employment at certain establishments at certain positions. I do believe that it is a bit ridiculous to not hire someone for having a tattoo or a piercing...to what extent does this adornment impact the individuals ability to execute his/her duties. I for one have 5 tattoos (none visible in work clothes) and two piercings (not including both my ears)...that has not interferred with the quality of my work and it certainly has not slowed down my advancing up the coporate ladder. I think sometimes we place focus on the wrong things...what of the clean cut "presentable" employee who can't not deliver on required outputs.
If there were Health and safety laws there would be policies regarding wearing jewellry at work e.g. large hoop earings (often worn by nurses)could be pulled out by patients. Peircing and tatooing should be regulated for the sake of the young impressionable teenager who could well regret their actions over time.
