Mr Lawrence, I beg to differ; The poor wake up in the morning with 24 hours being granted to them like everybody else, the great equality!
Jean-Paul Satre would say that the poor choose to remain that way...because they have a choice.
Contrary to your reasoning; "social engineering" exists to assist the poor in raising from the mire of poverty. It is the poor who do not have the burning desire to sour.
Look at the obstacles that the subject of Maya Angelo's "I Rise" had to overcome... and still I Rise!!
Jesus Christ tackled this very subject in the parable of the Ten Talents, and concluded... "the poor will always be with us." In other words, there will always be people who simply will not take up their cot and walk!
History is chock-full of people who have prospered despite considerable odds. A fine example is the gaped-toothed one; many other young women in her position as a teenager have given-up and decided that the burden is too great, and therefore succumbed to male domination and the acceptance of pittance at the alter of sexual favors. She made a choice that she deserved more and got more! Others are asking life for pennies, and that is what life will give to them. A few are demanding a prosperous life, and life have no choice but to grant that desire.
Until the people realize that..."none but ourselves can free our minds," we will continue to have the poor with us and all the resultant social ills. I am painfully aware that it is not at all that simple, but we have to start from some point, and we have to begin with us!!!
