Taiwan or China - make the call

Neither Taiwan or People's Republic of China will maintain diplomatic relations with St.Lucia if it tries to accommodate. It cannot work. Caricom has adopted a One China policy, most Caricom States have recognized Mainland China. Therefore, Kenny being a true regionalist has no alternative but to recall mainland China.
There will be vacillation and grand standing which has begun. Reviews will be announced to delay and duck from important decisions and it has started.
How can St.Lucia apply for ALBA membership, support CELAC and justify relations with Taiwan. One might argue that St.Kitts and St.Vincent are active in these two regional Chavez expeditions and they have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Well, let's wait and see the sustainability path.
Finally, I am very disappointed that the St.Lucia Government has not sent Taiwan packing. Asking to remove the current Resident Ambassador will not resolve anything because the Mission's interest is to ensure Taiwan has a beachhead.
I think it is time to call it a day with Taiwan. St.Lucia cannot lose. I am very disappointed.
What is most striking is the delay in making a decision. That, I cannot quantify at this point.
But surely, the agreement that has been promoted seems unstable.
What I can allude to is that International politics and diplomacy are not that different from local politics. Governments set agendas based on their views and the needs of the nation.
You would know something about that.
Having said that, one can only allude to the fact that convincing local business and other influential decision makers may have been forestalled prior to that commitment and as a result more time is now required locally to convince all the players and the majority of Saint Lucians that the government policy -Taiwan or China is beneficial for all of the people.
Once again, which one will serve Saint Lucia best, Taiwan or China? Make the call.
“We have a bilateral investment treaty with China, it is in context an ideal, which allows those people who are doing business from Asia to come through this region, using the bilateral investment treaty with Barbados as the legislative framework and from there on go elsewhere into the hemisphere...But if you have the investment treaty in place and you have a market that is proficient, a climate that is proficient, now is the time,” he said.
However, he warned that if we do nothing to seize the opportunity, then we are in danger of squandering the opportunity that has been given to us. (JRT)
GUANGZHOU, China - Stephen Harper laid bare the tension between Canada's desire to export more oil to China and the country's approach to human rights in his most direct speech during his trip to China.
He says Canada wants to sell its natural resources to people who want to buy them and it's clear that China has the need.
But he says there are obstacles to moving forward with a strategic partnership between the two countries.
He says Canadians expect their government to uphold fundamental freedoms in their business dealings.
"Therefore, in relations between China and Canada, you should expect us to continue to raise issues of fundamental freedoms and human rights," Harper told the dinner, according to a prepared text.
"And to be a vocal advocate for these just as we will be an effective partner in our growing and mutually beneficial economic relationship."
The ongoing dispute between Taiwan and Grenada over monies reportedly owed by the Caribbean nation to its former Asian benefactor could cause the shutdown of the Maurice Bishop International Airport.
Nations have perpetual self-interest and NOT perpetual friends. On that basis, the decision is very easy and even clear-cut, if the leaders can see clearly from our entrenched national begging posture.
