Very sad ..... The chickens are indeed coming home to roost, St. Lucia....
There is a serious need for us as parents to take a closer look at the lyrics in the music & the types of games that our kids indulge in for their entertainment. Gangsta rap? Music wars? Computer/PSP games (e.g. Mortal Combat, Grand Theft Auto) that involve players' adoption of very realistic identities or avatars who delight in stealing, fighting, maiming & killing? ....
The high prevalence of crime/violence in the news & in our society in general, already numbs their psyches from a very tender age.... Things are such that our children are growing up with the notion that brute force is the answer to resolving conflicts. If you "eh no 'bad mun' you eh playing no role" ... We as parents compound it by encouraging their delight in playing violent games in the name of "freedom of speech/expression" & being "anti-censorship".
But what's all the hullabaloo about, because after all, it's ONLY music or a harmless video game, isn't it? So you think, but the repercussions of these "seemingly harmless pastimes" are beginning cross the line of play-acting to spill over into real-life situations. To the detriment of our society, I might add, as our young people increasingly perpetrate horrible acts of violence against one another. Remember Antonia in Ciceron?
Despite seeing how certain metropolitan societies (I'm not mentioning any names) are rotting from the inside out, we still tend to copy their customs, attitudes & practices wholesale. Come on parents, what's it going to take for us to take the mandate to "Train up our children in the way that they should go" more seriously?.... A Columbine shooting, perhaps? ....
