could it be that just like La Rose and La Margeurite, the persons in charge never grew with the times. They did their best to keep the festival as small and uninteresting as possible. If you want cultural things to survive in this day and age you have to go above and beyond to create the hype and excitement around it. It is not acceptable to blame government and sponsors for festivals dying out. You have to invest in the product yourself and make marketable and worthy of a second look. Why don't these bands have their own fundraising activities throughout the year? Why aren't these bands doing things to sustain themselves? Having a band is a business. What's happening to these some of these bands now shows poor business management , which is why probably why government and sponsors are not forthcoming.
Take a look at the Red Unlimited business model. They are active throughout the year. Here is a band that is actively finding ways to sustain themselves. If your band is doing poorly, own up to your part in it and stop blaming everyone but yourself. Get back to the drawing board. Come up with a proper business plan and execute it. Just check me if you need direction. I have some ideas for how your band can sustain itself throughout the year.
I think people must come to realise that this is the end of carnival.Every year calypsonians sing about the same topics and the organisers never injected anything new to make us the public want to travel to take part in carnival. All the caribbean islands do the same thing for carnival hence the reason why people don't travel for carnival like they would do for jazz.Times are really hard and i think the government should give that money to improve education, employment for the youth and taking care of elderly instead .
To "work in progress" - I am in total agreement with your perception that a carnival band SHOULD generate their own funds, and operate as a BUSINESS - year round.
Nothing wrong in that ... but one can only bring the horse to the water ...
It is unfortunate that most of the carnival band leaders have no knowledge of business management, save but a few (Red Intl, Rituals to name a few on one hand). In this day and age, a knowledge of business management is key to much success - I hope they see that light and do something about it.
Nowadays - carnival should be treated as a year round BUSINESS and not a by the wayside, let's come together now "thing".
All the other carnival events are in jeopardy: queen show, kiddies carnival ... all of them!!
