Here's a killer who headed the notorious spy agency C.I.A., yet was unable to have a “Jabal” without his wife finding out – something the average married man in Lucia does everyday, for ever and still not caught; ask John Compton? “an accomplished gentleman” ??? you meant an accomplished DEVIL.
You didn’t need special insider’s access to know that Broadwell wasn’t the only one with whom general Petraeus did calisthenics. The FBI didn’t need to investigate. Even before she came on the scene, scads of columnists, pundits, reporters, and politicians were in bed with him. And weirdly enough, many of them still are. (Typical was NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams mournfully discussing the “painful” resignation of “Dave” -- “the most prominent and best known general of the modern era.”) Adoring media people treated him like the next military Messiah, a combination of Alexander the Great, Napoleon, and Ulysses S. Grant rolled into one fabulous piñata. It’s a safe bet that no general of our era, perhaps of any American era, has had so many glowing adjectives attached to his name. Perhaps Petraeus’s single most insightful moment, capturing both the tragedy and the farce to come, occurred during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He was commanding the 101st Airborne on its drive to Baghdad, and even then was inviting reporters to spend time with him. At some point, he said to journalist Rick Atkinson, “Tell me how this ends.” Now, of course, we know: in farce and not well; a disaster that continues to send shock waves throughout the region even as we write this. Petraeus oversaw the continued use of drone strikes by the C.I.A. Spy agency. Under his control, the CIA accelerated the use of drone strikes to target suspected anti-American fighters in Pakistan. But the CIA also bombed Pakistan using what is called “signature strikes”--which means the “launching [of] strikes against terrorism suspects even when it does not know the identities of those who could be killed,” as the Washington Post puts it. Those signature strikes are likely responsible for the deaths of hundreds of of innocent civilians, though the exact number is not known since the Obama administration categorizes dead “militants” as “all military-age males in a strike zone.”
