St Lucia's economic problems are not such that they could be overcome in the short term. Having been through sugar, coffee, bananas, coal and now tourism (the latter competing against every other country in the world - with little to offer in competition in the way of differentiation),we need a long term strategy to develope some sort of high return for a sensible investment - including technical and electronic training for our young people, for whom the only hope at the moment is to either make it big in pop music or sport, but not in Agriculture, which is too much effort and hard work. What's wrong with precision engineering, for instance? - small, high value, depending on high levels of skills! Or specialist electronics equipment?.....Learn it abroad and bring the skills home, rather than the reverse. As for Work Permits - they are doomed to prevent entrepreneurs from bringing employment into St Lucia. If someone wants to bring employment here, let's welcome them!
