Most people in Britain want to see it restored. It's the establishment that stopped it.
The only issue, a show stopper, is proof. If there is the slightest doubt they are innocent then they cannot be condemned. But life should mean life sentence at least.
We should have developed enough as a People to decide for ourselves what is civilized or not. We are capable of clear enough thinking not to be persuaded by the duplicity of the "developed nations" where societal norms are concerned. The local polls may not be highly 'scientific' but they do indicate a deep knowledge of our own people. The poll reveals what we all know, which is simply, if you hang proven murderers in this country, that crime will be SEVERELY diminished. That may not be true in any other Caribbean country but it is true in St. Lucia- YOU MUST UNDERSTAND YOUR PEOPLE. Consider the demographic of the frequent murderers on the island. Most are young men who love life but subconsciously know they will not have to pay with their own lives when they kill even their 'best' friend. Their machismo sells them the thought that they can ' handle Bordelais' , a thought reversal manifested by the senior murders or other criminals who warn others not to follow their example.
Now for the PRIVY COUNCIL. Time to cut ties with it. Simple. No pseudo intellectualism on the matter necessary. But of course it requires political will which is always lacking where it matters.
If you don't want to hang them let them roast in a isolated small cell, without contact to the outside world and doctor visits and other inmates, by bred and water alone til they die.

Very good report Earl, keep it up. What happens when these rascals have so called served their time in Jail? are they to be left adrift in the open society, with no jobs, no finance, no insurance and some with no family support? God help St.Lucia.
