Slow Boat to China

Jeff,

Reading your piece, one is inclined to think:

SPEED BOAT TO ZIMBABWE!!! JET PLANE TO RWANDA!!!

as a more accurate heading for the nonsense you issued from your pen this time.

If yours is the official point of view of the government of the day, then there is indeed cause for alarm as regards the health of St. Lucian democracy. Alone the sheer belligerence and innuendo of your piece is enough to make one fear government sponsored death squads coming to silence opponents.

One must be demented to characterise the innocuous visit of a group of politicians to China - a major partner of virtually every democracy on the planet - as ipso facto akin to planning to overthrow the legally elected government of the day. You are the one who is guilty of inciting and misinforming the public in this matter.

You sound extremely distraught and disorientated - these are not the qualities one hopes to find in a bona fide democrat. Rather, these are qualities generally found in authoritarian regimes eager to paint all criticism as a conspiracy against the state.

If the present government is your boss, then my advice to them is to separate themselves from you very fast. You are a major liability, as you evidently feel more akin to Zimbabwe-style democracy than the Western democracy we aspire to secure.

Just for the record, I don't care which set of ninnies is playing government or opposition in this island. However, I do care about not seeing the island degenerate into Rwandan-style mass homicide. But I guess with persons such as our humble servant functioning as official mouthpieces for the government, the breach has already been broken and we are now being prepared for the night of the long knives.

On days like today, one wonders whether there is truth to the claim that some people are genetically incapable of building and maintaining a democracy.

The evidence to support this view has certainly been verified by your latest piece.
