Firstly, Martinique is not a French Colony, it is an overseas French department and has been for the last 70 years. Martiniquans are French with the same rights as Parisians.Indeed, Martinique is as much a part of France as the French Alps.
However, this strike action is a result of severe abuses and liberties taken by the private in particular the food distribution sector, where basic food items are 30 percent more expensive than in France. Basic wages are 30 percent less. A bag of flour purchased in France is 160 percent cheaper than in Martinique. After Hurricane Dean food distributors have been employing unfair practices by increasing prices at will, with no reaction from the administration. And it got to breaking point where the people could not take no more. Gasoline prices also escape price control and that is why gas stations have been closed down.
