I firmly believe that a judge must always try to temper justice with mercy, but for some reason I have a problem with that sentence.
This is court sanctioned "rangement" (my best attemp at creole spelling). in a matter like this, ATTEMPTED MURDER, that should never be allowed. It should have been "fine and confine".
Send the message everytime Mr./Madam Justice that wilful, wanton violence like that will land you in jail for a long time.
I can bet you some nefarious character sure took note of that one and thy will fashion a similar response to a verbal spat.

Intercostal (not intercaustal); meaning between the ribs. Just thought I would point this out.
