There is absolutely no indication that anyone in St. Lucia, inside or ourside government, has done anything inapproriate.
The actions of the St. Lucia registered company may be questionable or illegal; that does not mean that there was any wrong doing by any one in St. Lucia.
Let us see where the facts lead us and not assume the worse about our fellow Lucians.
"The question with no clear answer forthcoming is this: How did the Saint Lucian Government, or more precisely the attorney general and the Prime Minister get involved in this Italian scandal?"
Mr. Editor,
There is nothing in the article that indicates that the SLU government is "involved" in any way with this scandal.
What we have here is two government officials responding in their official capacities to a scandal in ITALY; that does not mean they are involved in any way. They were in no way part of the commercial transactions that took place in Italy. It is inaccurate and unfair to say that they were "involved" in any way.
What we have here are two extreames. I don't see how SLP can regard Rick as being more dangerous than Mr. George, but does not see the slanted writing of Mr. George as being in the same vain.
One. Because an apartment was sold using a St. Lucia registered corporation reflects in no way on St. Lucia or our off shore business. The illigality of the transfer of the apartment in question seems to rest with the question of the price which may have been low so as to gift the buyer with an asset worth more than the sum for which it was sold.
The company oculd have been in any part of the world and no jurisdiction would in any way be able to uncover such issues unless it were brought to their attention. The company could have been in the UK, Canada or the US and no one would have been any wiser. This is an Italian not a St. Lucian problem. Our local press should reconnize this.
Second. If there is any reason to fault the Attorney General is that unless he was told to do so by a court he should be careful how much information he divulges. A private company is a private company and he could end up destroying the whole indistry in St. Lucia if he , in his own discretion, divulges that which is not his to tell.
I do not think that any court would say that the AG is prohibited from providing information to the PM. This is not divulging. He did not take any action to make the information public.
The issue the government should be concerned about is the leaking of the document meant for the PM only.
LLL said... "Something smells fishy, and it ain't in Italy; most likely it's near the waterfront. Past me the LYSOL, please"
I agree. Something smells fishy; it stinks to high heaven. And it IS in ITALY, not St. Lucia.
Let us get away from the "most likely" speculation and stick to the facts. There is absolutely no evidence that anyone in St. Lucia is involved in this stinky business.
The Italian journalists know much more than they have let out. Travelling to St. Lucia to interview the Attorney General all the way from Italy to St. Lucia, is not for the sake of good health.Given what has been taking place within the Government, Internationally, St. Lucia is recognised as a corrupt country, where the Offshore Sector is very suspicious. St. lucia has a whole lot to clean up.
Unlike the Registry for Domestic Companies, The Registry for OFFSHORE Companies is managed and administered by a private company, and not the Government. That Private Company, located on the waterfront, is the one headed by Lisle Chase, who was once Chairman of the National Development Corporation. The Registrar for the Offshore Companies is employed by that private company headed by Lisle Chase. That Registrar of Offshore Companies, unilke the Registrar for domestic companies is not a civil servant.
The story going around is that someone who has been intimately involved in what has been under investigation in Italy, is spilling lots of beans. There is much, much more to that particular matter, but this is just being used to open up a whole lot of mess going on in the OFFSHORE sector in St. Lucia. In a few weeks or days, for that matter, lots of other things will be in the news.
One key question to be answered by the Attorney General, is who is the Registered Agent in St. Lucia who registered that Offshore Company? company? In other words, who registered that company? What are the names of the Directors? Who was the Minister responsible for the Offshore Sector at the time of registration? Who was the Director of Financial Services at the time of Registration?
It appears from what we are being told, the issue originating in Italy is fast moving to other countries, regarding other not directly related transactions. It looks like a Pandora's Box,has just been opened, and much more will be in the press. None of which will do St. Lucia any good.
St. lucia cannot be naive and think that it has nothing to do with the Government. It has everything to do with the Government, as the Government of St. Lucia, is responsible for the business of OFFSHORE Services, and responsible for maintaining the reputation of St. Lucia.
The mere fact that the minute addressed to the Prime Minister from the Attorney General, made its way, to the press, speaks volumes. There are persons who are intimately involved, and are co-operating to avoid their own downfall. Time will tell.
It would be interesting to know as well, who in St. Lucia maintained business relationships with the Government Official being investigated in Italy.
It would be interesting also to know who the Chairman of the National Development Corporation was, at the time of incorporation. As well as who the Registrar of Offshore Companies was at that time. All these are pertinent to the investigation. With this international high-level investigation and where and what it will involve, is very likely to see these players having to respond to several questions.

Do we remember the big scandal involving Italians who were given permission to built within the Piton Heritage Area in Soufriere. Who was never approved by the Ministry of Planning nor the DCA? But somehow went ahead on their own authority to build their house without permission within the Piton Heritage Area/ One of those who strongly stood against the St. Lucian Authorities and the people of St. Lucia, and sided with the Italians when the people of Soufriere marched in protest was none other than the brother of a very controversial Cabinet Minister. He the Cabinet Minister's brother it is alledged was an Architect involved in the house design.
If Cabinet Ministers can collude right before the eyes of St. Lucians to evade customs duties and even tell lies before the OECS Court of Appeal, can you imagine what is done behind closed doors?
Someone just reminded me that the underground world revolves around money. Now those who have been selling St. Lucia out, will soon meet their waterloo for the love of money. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. St. Lucia now gone, everything gone.
Today, nothing is surprising in St. Lucia. Anything goes.
At St. Lucia's watering holes,The term ITALIANO MAFIOSO is now on the lips of everyone. What's that about ? Our journalists have their work cut out for them.
There is absolutely no evidence of any cocomackery by Government in this matter. Those who say there that there is are only playing politics, as they do with crime and tourism and everything else.
What is the voice and the star newspaper is it to sell newspaper or to speak about issues which confront the lives of st lucian there are lots of st lucian who are having a hard time getting by many are trying to leave their own country in order to have a better life The newspapers as well as talk shows should be able to talk on issues that affect the people and the mess that this goverment is creating and not trying to have growth in development and jobs for all st lucians Its ashamed of an island with so much potential in the carribean is being degrated by cheap politians
St Lucians: "Beware of gift-bringing Italians;" Italy is a totally corrupt society! Generally, their morals are unreliable. Let me also add: 1. Offshore companies are one of the biggest scams in our current financial world. Basically, they exist to HIDE things - money and theft! 2. Eventually - sooner rather than later - the world of offshore havens will fall apart: much the same way the world of finance is rapidly crumbling before our very eyes. 3. St Lucia should get rid of all its offshore companies as soon as possible. 4. St Lucia should avoid doing business with Italians whom are not very carefully checked, because at best, they see Caribbean people as a bunch of semi-civilized fools, in short, fools only to be USED! 5. This scandal is totally Italian-made. Mark my words, their plan is to make St Lucia take ALL THE BLAME on the international stage. 6. Their plan is for St Lucia to be their scapegoat - that's simply their way of operating. 7. Their reporters' visit to St Lucia had ONLY one motive: to shift the world's focus away from Italy and place it on St Lucia.

You've got Rick in the say dead bend of misleading people. You've got Mr. George of the Voice hell bend of misleading people with his pro SLP slant.
What a shame!

The real price of apartament is 1 milion of € not 3 milions €.
Now if I remember.
One day not too long ago a building was sold in Brooklyn that was owned by a government and not by the individual who sold the building ..........
Hmmm. Now where did I hear THAT story ??????
Two quick points.
One. Because an apartment was sold using a St. Lucia registered corporation reflects in no way on St. Lucia or our off shore business.
