This article's heading is misleading. The content is lobsided. Though I am in agrrement that the Opposition's argument against the implementation of tax is inept, your assessment of them while in power singing a different tune screams biasness.
Let us recall that the SLP when in opposition favored totally different sentiments. Yet you fail to entertain that regard.
To my novice mind, what I would see as speaking with one voice would be for explanations to be given by both parties as to why VAT was introduced at 15% VS 5%. Also why should the Hotel sector be given 8% rate while everyone else is 15%. The excuse given is an insult to us.
Let us not forget that we are being charged VAT on stock that were ordered prior to VAT (meaning we are paying more at the time being). Why not have VAT at 5% or 8% for everyone, then have it increased to 15% at a later date?
Preferential treatment for those who are better able to afford it makes it abundantly clear whose interest the Government has. Laborian
The fact is, even the very IMF as we witnessed at its recent annual Meeting last month, alongside the World Bank is recognizing that not all economic policies are 'one size fits all". It had to take a woman at the helm of the IMF to tell those idiotic men to put some commonsense in their heads and in essence commonsense was made before books and theory.
Kenny Anthony and whoever his so-called economic advisors are, were and are downright STUPID to have introduced the VAT in Saint Lucia. They ought to have focussed instead on cutting down on their very wasteful expenditure, and ensuring that the DOCTORS AND LAWYERS ARE APYING THEIR FAIR SHARE ON THEIR INCOMES MADE AT THEIR VARIOUS OFFICES. FOR A START.
