Kwéyòl, Kwéyòl, Kwéyòl. Dae pi ke tan? Nearly half the people of Saint Lucia cannot hold a decent conversation in Kwéyòl but throw in a little politics and everyone is a language expert.
Some love their Kwéyòl so much ask them if they ever took an interest in being able to write at least a sentence in langue mama yoe.
There are countless Saint Lucians who cannot converse in Kwéyòl not by their choice but because they were prohibited from speaking the language. It was the case in my home as well but that prohibition came too late and while I am thankful I cannot truthfully say that it has really amounted to a hill of beans for me one way or the other.
How has our ability to speak Kwéyòl advanced our socioeconomic situation? Is any Saint Lucian's inability to speak Kwéyòl make them less Saint Lucian as is being suggested by some?
When did we become such defenders and promoters of Kwéyòl? Not since the advent of Chastanet in politics we begin to realize the importance of being able to speak Kwéyòl.
Some who shout the loudest here about Kwéyòl I am sure have placed that prohibition on their own children. Others have children in their own home who do not speak a lick of Kwéyòl.
How can we explain that with every generation the percentage of those with Kwéyòl fluency has been diminishing? Which institution on the island promotes Kwéyòl fluency in schools? Should the promotion of Kwéyòl fluency be just an October thing or a year round thing?

YOUR HISTORY IN TRINIDAD:
Sandy
Sandy was an enslaved African who led the first major slave revolt in Tobago in 1770. Sandy, from all indications, was a perfectly built enslaved African who despised the cruel system where his people suffered all unimaginable forms of brutality.
He killed his slave master and organized a number of meetings with fellow enslaved Black people to plan the revolt before leading his fighters in launching an attack on the British at Fort James in Plymouth to capture arms and ammunition. He then moved his fighters to the great house on Mount Irvine’s sugar plantation.
The revolt spread to different parts of Tobago and forced the British authorities on the island to call in battleships from Grenada to quell the revolt. Sandy and some of his followers were never captured but escaped to the Toco/Matelot area of Trinidad from what is now called Sandy Point at Crown Point.

Jonas Mohammed Bath
Jonas Mohammed Bath was a Black Muslim priest/Imam and member of the Koramantyn tribe in Africa. He arrived in Trinidad in 1805 as an enslaved African and was put to work on the construction of Fort George, Port of Spain.
As a Muslim Imam/priest, he had a certain amount of influence over his fellow Muslims working on the construction of the fort, so he was appointed as an overseer or “colonial negro” with pay. From the money he received while working on the fort, he acquired enough to pay for the release of 200 of the enslaved Africans on the island.
After the completion of the fort, he purchased several acres of land at Santa Cruz Valley, which he named Mizra Estate after the Arabic word for a country estate. He died in September 1838, one month after the emancipation of the enslaved Africans in Trinidad. Mizra is the country of Egypt.
Broken Traditions
African family traditions, which varied according to national origin and religion, could not be replicated in the New World after Africans were forced into slavery. The slave trade was responsible for breaking up African families. Husbands, wives and children could be sold separately because U.S. law did not legally recognize their families.

Enslaved Black people were denied a secure family life. Because they were property and could not legally marry, a permanent family could not be a guaranteed part of enslaved people’s lives. They had no right to live or stay together, no right to their own children, and it was common for enslaved parents and children to live apart.
Certainly the common practice of denying the slave his natural rights of family life still impacts our psychology and thinking today. That is the reason it is so easy for Black men to walk away from their children. Something in our genetic pool is saying let me walk away from this responsibility. I don't have a legal right to it any way. But we should take a long and hard look at this practice and resolve that never to leave our children without a father. Staying in the home is connected to slavery as well. The slave master provided all the basic needs of the slave. We were responsible for nothing except labor. If we would make these two commitments in our lives, it would go a long ways in developing our people.
Firstly, to accept responsibility for our selves, our families, and our communities. This will never happen as long as we are not interested in business life. As long as we are not interesting in competing for business development in our communities, our families will remain weak.
And secondly, we should vow to never leave our children. Even if we are not in the home with them, we should pay child support and continue to be in their lives with regular visits, and strong conversations about their aspirations, education, and dreams. We should resist slave culture still heavily impacting our world and lives.
People I live overseas and this newspaper is filled with the kind of information that teaches much. Like him or hate him, I look forward to the strong and potent facts presented by THE SON OF MAN and the many others in this paper. The history, the discussions, are so powerful I have left the Baptist Church, and I am now reading the Quran looking at becoming Muslim.

It is an historical fact that philosophy begins first with the Black skinned people of the Nile Valley around 2800 BC, this which simply means about 2200 years before the appearance of Thales of Miletus, thus, before anything was ever considered as the Western philosophy!!!
It is a truism that not only is the word philosophy not Greek, the practice of philosophy existed long before the Greeks. Imhotep, Ptahhotep, Amenemhat, Merikare, Duauf, Amenhotep, son of Hapu, Akhenaten, and the sage of Khunanup, are just a few of the African philosophers who lived long before there was a Greece or a Greek philosopher!!!
And it is also a fact that Black Africans finished building the pyramids in 2500 BC, this which simply means, it would be about one thousand seven hundred years before Homer, the first Greek writer, appears!!!!
There is therefore no gainsaying the fact that your ancestors were not just some set of people! In actual fact they were the only pioneers of world civilizations!!!

Your input is one this contributor who said he is considering turning his back on his current religion, Baptiste, and become a Muslim. He would find many pointers there that would tell him he is jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.
The affinity that exist between the African and Islam is simply this: about 90% of the things you have to observe and do as a Muslim is African in origin. However, as an African this religion is NOT truly you. Look in the African continent for what is more truly you.
In passing I should also add, the other great religion, Judaism has borrowed much from Africa. There is the concept of one god to begin with. The Ten Commandments are plagiarised from the so-called Egyptian Book of the Dead and not given to Moses by god as described in the Bible.
The truth is Africa have not had any friend. Everyone who befriended Africa did so for what they get from that people and country. They exploited the people’s humanity, robbed them of their culture and history; the Arabs grabbed the North East etc. which is the reason why today the North East Africans are predominantly Arabic in origin.
No one is blaming Allen Chastanet for the lack of speaking the Kweyol; he is being blamed, however, for his deceitfulness, maliciousness and arrogance. He should simply have said to the caller that he would rather he spoke in English, nothing wrong with that. But to blame the mike and systems for not understanding what the caller had to say is freaking idiotic - category 5 moron. Yes, and this is our leaders!! I detected your annoyance, but I felt Allen was insulting, not only to the elderly caller, but to all Lucians, thinking he could pull this stunt of magic on people from Leslie Land Rd. and Black Malley Gap.
