NEW POLICE CHIEFS

Congratulations to the new police chiefs! Surely they must now revel in their appointments. But are they truly ready for the task at hand?

The law enforcers of St Lucia seem to believe that by trying to instill fear and engaging in open warfare with the criminal entity will solve all St Lucia's problems of violence. They have the tendency to take to the airwaves and declare how mighty and powerful they are and how relentlessly they will pursue perpetrators of violence. It happens every-time a new Commissioner is appointed. Is that supposed to make St Lucians feel safer? Of course that's an old game which has become rather monotonous.

For one, the presence of heavily armed police or SSU officers does not enhance our tourist industry at all. It speaks volumes of the idiocy of our so-called leaders. Secondly, sending open messages to those responsible for the upsurge of crime via national television or radio broadcasts will not deter criminals. Thirdly, barging into the ghettoes and searching people's houses without search warrants and dragging young men suspected of hooliganism or criminal activity will not do the trick either. Surely that tactic have not yet enabled the police to solve even one of the recent murders. all it has done is to create more animosity among police and the citizenry.

All these strategies simply fan the flames of violence and only serves to create an atmosphere of fear among the ordinary citizens of this country.

The demeanor of our new chief reeks of the "Martial law" idea and I certainly do not believe that this will be in the nation's best interest.
For God's sakes, why won't the authorities wise up?

Vernon Francois knows very well that there is considerable distrust among the public toward the police and because of that, respect for police is at an all time low. It is simple: The police have lost the respect of the people and subsequently the people no longer trust them. They have to find the answer to that truth and fix that problem first.
It is no secret that there is a total breakdown in communication between the public and the police and so criminals have taken advantage of that opportunity to spread mayhem.
If the crime hotline is no longer yielding favorable results, what makes the police believe that people will be more apt to coming forward with information just because they patrol the streets with guns?

It is quite laughable for Francois to dismiss the concerns of the St Lucian public with regards "Police investigating Police." For many years now that practice has continued and unfortunately, the authorities have never seen it fitting and appropriate to change it. I believe that others will agree that there ought to be an independent special investigating unit to investigate police improprieties and that body ought not to be affiliated with the police at all.

For his part, the Minister for Home Affairs, Guy Mayers, need to get off his laurels and see to it that such a body be organized, because as long as police continue to investigate their own, then the corruption that exists will fester and to the detriment of the Police Force and subsequently to our people.

We do not need vigilante cops among us. What we need is a Police Force that will deal with crime according to the criminal code which governs our laws. What we need are police officers worthy of our respect and not men and women who thrive on the fear of a people. What we need is a Police Commissioner who has proper discernment qualities and one who can sit and formulate anti-violence strategies for this country that will curb the rise of crime.

We the people need to be part and parcel of the formulation of such strategies. Community gatherings where police and people meet to discuss these ideas will be much better than Police and Prime Minister making such a ruckus on television telling us in a nutshell that they will be holding our country hostage along with the criminals.

I will say introduce curfews islandwide. We must start somewhere. Anonmyous #1 the police must inform the ppll that they will be increasing measures to deter crime. WE MUST go to the ghettos and eradicate them ALL of the thugs. WE MUST patrol the streets PERIOD. WE MUST engage in WAREFARE with the criminals. What is the colition forces doing in Afghanistan? Are they not taking the fight to the taliban? The police MUST do what they have to do and I will advise you too; I hope that you have riased yours sona and daughter well so that they do not become part of the crime gange we now witness today. IT BEGINS WITH US as parents. You very well sound like you are giving comfort to the criminals damn you!!!

There are many hooligans in Castries, that you cannot pass on the Peter Blvd without someone harrassing you.
Rotating Police chiefs is a good thing. Maybe the force gets hit with one chief who is not corrupt.

The problem is Guy Mayers and his criminal son Samuel Snuffy Mayers. His gang ties in the graveyard have been investigated by police and what does he do? Send him over to Florida. This man glorifies all criminals on his facebook pages as well as msn but his father wants to speak about parents not doing a good job.
