At the time Cherry's allegations were carried in the Voice, my wife and I had just received a shipment of books and other resource materials that had been requested by the management of the BTC. Although the story disturbed us greatly, in the end it led us only to hope that our small contribution would help to avert a recurrence of the alleged incident.

Nothing in the story gave us any reason to believe it might be untrue. It was carried without any caveats, reservations or disclaimers; it quoted multiple sources and there was even a suggestion that any statement from the management of the BTC denying the incident took place would be untruthful.

When we met with Mr. Terrance a week later, he intimated to us the story was untrue and that he was awaiting the doctor's written report before issuing a statement. Now that the statement has been issued based in part on the doctors report, are we to believe the doctor is also lying and is part of an elaborate cover-up?

The fact is that this story should never have been carried by published by the Voice or used by any other journalist. in hindsight it became clear to us that there was no attempt at corroboration. The story was based on a single source who was not the primary source and who was relying on secondary sources who themselves were not contacted by the Voice. This is a cardinal breach of journalistic ethics, principles and practice.

I suppose the Voice will now treat anything that Flavia Cherry says with suspicion - which is what it should have done from the outset. It does not help the image of the Voice when it behaves just as irresponsibly as its sources.

For the very first time, I will agree with CSI.

yeah right!! i believe every word flavia cherry uttered.

and yes, i do believe it's a cover up as well.

why, isn't that the way it is in st lucia, where the authorities spews out half truths, innuendoes to make themselves looks good. i will discredit the powers that be any day over flavia cherry.

this is a cover up of some sort...

WELL NOW
WHAT HAVE WE HERE ?

I used to love Cherry because she was in the middle, she stood for something back then, but now she's all bought and sold by Kenny & and Co., so it's all bloody politics, you know.

To Anonynmous # 3: Your distrust of teh Authorities is understandable. But let's suppose Cherry should win a seat in the next election; and let's suppose she becomes the Miniser for BTC and there is a similar allegation. Would you believe the authorities then?

To anonymous #3 .... you BLINDLY believe Flavia Cherry WITHOUT investigating her story yourself. This makes me see you as a FOLLOWER of malicious gossip and untruths, instead of seeking the truth for yourself - shame on you.

At least CSI had some kind of involvement in the BTC - a contribution of books, etc. - hence his perspective on the situation.

Why don't you, anonymous #3, pay a visit to the BTC and see the situation for yourself, and while you are at it - make YOUR OWN materialistic, or humanitarian contribution, to the Centre; instead of siding BLINDLY with Ms Cherry.

If more St Lucians paid contributions - monetary, humanitarian or materialistic - to the BTC, it would be in a much better state today.

St Lucians for St Lucia.

Why doesn't she just change her name to CHERRY FLAVORED??

To #6: First of all, when it comes to politics, I am a "no-wher-ians",..if cherry should contests and win any elections, and becomes the minister responsible for BTC, she will be the first to distorts and twists the information to suits her agendas.

To #7: You posed many questions. First of all, I arrived at the conclusion that cherry is speaking the truth based on hitherto precedents set by the authorities, as recently as the saga being played out in the electronic media regarding Frederick and Robby. Go figure!! Secondly, when the authorities, shamelessly and lawlessly enacting laws for the benefit of a few unscrupulous minister; Mondesir comes to mind (ref. OECS Supreme Court Rulings on that case). Thirdly, when govenment ministers under-valued invoices for imported goods. Fourthly, when a past government minister proclaimed be a PhDed, and it was all a farce at the time. Fifthly, when over $45,000,000 was freely given out, and up to date, no apologies from arrogant Kenny (ad nauseum), instead he is twisting the facts and shamelessly seeking relection. Sixthly, when we have convicted criminals as our leaders (do you expect any truths from this ministry?). Seventhly, the public still awaits the truth from Kenny regards Rochemel (spelling, et al...Rather than speak the truth to us, they sets forth all types of biased inquiries.

Your second questions is about contribution of some sort; either monetarily, materialistic or other meand. My dear man or woman, I am, you are as well, paying taxes to meet the needs of the BTC. The reason(s) BTC is the way it is today is because of neglect, politics, bad management, unqulified personnel, criminals acting as guard at the BTC (as per a report from year)...

Having highlighted the above, I am sticking my views and opinions, that cherry is speaking the truth.

Another classic case in point: 75 young smart people are about to be denied the opportunities(by the authorities) to study subjects such as IT, Engineering, Physics, etc at the Ilinois Institute of Technology -IIT; only because the authorities took negatively or were not pleased when Dr Carl Mack called a spade a spade. So, tell me, what is there to believe when those unscrupulous people feeds us with bullshit...

To no-where-ian: The very valid examples you've raised of corruption, etc, do not together say that Cherry is speaking the truth or that there has been a cover up of the alleged incident. Cherry could have been deceieved by others with their own agenda or she could have been driven by her political agenda to deceive the public.

If all of us took the position that our responsibilities start and end with our taxes, then nothing will happen in Saint Lucia. That's like saying a thief should not attack you because you pay your taxes to Government to put policemen on the streets.

I believe though that more pressure should be put on government to make better use of our taxes. I would much prefer my taxes being used to whip BTC into shape and to send those 70 students you speak about to Chicago, than to support carnival.

St Lucians get a life. All this BS is disgusting. There are many intelligent St. Lucians but some of you are pathetic and making it look bad for all including Deryck W. no wonder the man do not here. This tiny island is the laughing stock of the world.

Flavia

Your move to the SLP did not help you. It has discredited you. You have lost your voice. You speak from the view point of a political operator and no longer an advocate. Get a life. You are done.

The majority of "journalists" in st lucia (electronic or print) are untrained, so I'm not surprised at how they thrive on unconfirmed reports in order get the front page story. Heads should roll - FIRE STAN BISHOP!

It is obvious that Flavia defies the status quo to effect the needed social change in society. Let's be more progressive in our thinking and attitudes and embrace women like Flavia who exemplifies genuineness and concern for all.

awah...LOL
Falvia....

I don't think St Lucians respect her.

A few years ago a certain Voice reporter wrote an expose describing the conditions at the Boys Training Center. Sadly, instead of investigating the situation and fixing the problems there in the interest of the wards, the powers that be tried to cover it up by trying to focus on who let the cat out of the bag. That reporter told the truth then. There were photos to prove that the conditions at the center were despicable. That expose resulted in the transfer of all the correctional officers working aqt the BTC to the Bordelais Correctional Facility. A small strip of plaster for a great big suppurating wound! Not too long after that a young boy by the name of Jamal mysteriously died in a fire there. Again, that same reporter wrote a scathing article, showing up the BTC. Nobody bothered. Was that reporter lying again? It appears that every time somebody exposes the ills of the BTC some hotshot in charge cries foul. I do not do not believe that Flavia Cherry cried wolf. I believe Terrence Leonard and the authorities are the ones hiding something. Suffice to say that it seems that unless there is utter catastrophe at that center that is supposed to be a reformatory and a place of protection and rehabilitation for delinquent youths we will all continue to bury our heads in the sand and continue to pretend all is well. It is obvious that the so called management of the BTC along with Terrance only seek to glorify themselves and the "good job" they are doing at the expense of the lives of their wards. I think the VOICE should make their own investigation. Get their reporters out there and do what it takes the find out the truth instead of taking Terrance's word for it. Or are they too chicken to take a go at it? Do we the public have a right to know the truth behind the goings on at the BTC?
I ask the question that this reporter asked some years ago. Who is minding the Boys? Indeed who?

Canadian Assistance was rejected outright by the overlord of the BTC Terrance Leonard..... And yet he has the audacity to say "everything" is being done to improve things at the BTC.

In May 2010 a citizen of Canada approached the staff of BTC and was directed the the "boss" Terrance Leonard. That individual volunteered to render his assistance in providing an enrichment program for the boys of the BTC. Surprisingly, Terrance asked for money up front telling the individual that religion had been offered to the BTC by many people in the past. He said in no uncertain terms that he did not want anything to do with religion at the BTC and he only wanted financial aid from Canada. That response rather rude and irresponsible. Which begs the question: is financial assistance the ultimate solver of the BTC's problems? As if the rejection of assistance in the areas of art and other programs in which the boys could have become active participants and no doubt willing ones was not bad enough, Terrance did not seem to care that the flagpole outside was bent out of shape and the St Lucia flag was flying as if it had been beaten too badly by the elements. He did not seem to care when it was suggested to him that the flagpole needed mending and the flag needed to stand out majestically. Where was his national pride? And who is the Jamaican deputy that everyone has to go through before they could have reach Terrance? (He is said to be some psychologist or psychiatrist.Do we even know or care what is happening at the BTC? With a manager who seem to enjoy lording it over everyone and rudely demands money from people who readily volunteer their services to improve the quality of life for the boys of the institution. Apparently he does not think that these young men need anything but his "iron glove" attitude and a demeanor that says the boys have no rights whatsoever. No wonder he is too ashamed to admit that that young ward was violated on his watch. Flavia Cherry did not lie..the only liar is Terrance and soon the rest of St Lucia will realize that. I only hope it is not too late when they do!

Anonymous said...

The time is ripe for St.Lucia to ensure that the very best and qualified persons are placed in positions especially those in Human and Social Services. Terrance comes off as someone who tries at his job but simply does not have the wherewithal to deal with his position, that is, at least in an effective capacity. It is time that qualified persons are placed at the helm of positions whether in Cabinet or other civil status positions to ensure that the interest of the citizenry is secured. Flavia could very well be telling the truth since there has been a historical past with BTC covering up the troubled status of the institution.

why every time someone makes a statement be it true or untrue on a topic there always some POLITICS coming up. Lets get to the truth of the story and stop going back and forth.
