The government is not concerned about due digilence or making the right decision. These men want to be part of the selection process so they can give their constituents, who in merit may not be the best fit, the opportunity to get the scholarship. This government has done enough. Its time for a change.

The government is right, you can't just throw 75 young men and women out there without taking all their well-being into account. It would be stupid.

Like one member from rise stated at a meeting...the Gov't can quickly throw in $1Million for Carnival but can't put a little less than a million for 75 students to further their education in a field of much demand. Where are their priorities???

All due respect to Dr. King. However proper planning and consideration must be given to all aspect of this venture. The safety and security of the students, their accommodation, their welfare all these must be taken into account. The time given for government to act is definitely to short. If the institute is serious then they would give sufficient time for government to put everything in place in order to facilate this programme. If not then they were toying with Dr. King's passion for youth development in this country.

My son is attending medical school in the UK. Like a number of other students, he received a partial scholarship from an American University for his Pre-Med years and we obtained a loan for the difference- which was almost the same amount as is being sought for now by the students. I do not qualify for another student loan having already availed of the maximum borrowing for student loans. I had not thought of this before but perhaps we should approach/lobby the government to guarantee the final 3 years of the medical program in the same way that Rise is doing. If a precedent is set, there will be droves of parents like myself who will want to adopt that route.

Some information about IIT
http://www.iit.edu/about/quick_facts.shtml

http://www.iit.edu/undergrad_admission/apply/deadlines.shtml

The official application deadline was in April for International students so this does seem very rushed. Students who had already arranged university education at other schools may have wanted to participate in this program given the quality of the IIT courses.

Also, has enough vetting been done of the 75 students so that there is a high degree of certainty that they will complete their studies. IIT is likely to be a challenge for a number of students especially students with only CXC's. It might be a waste of money to pay for only 1 or 2 years of education for folks who were not sufficiently prepared.

In addition, it would be interesting to see what the graduation rates for some of the scholarship programs has been like say the Cuba program or the Grambling program. Are such statistics publicly available?

The government and ministry officials have seen this before. Don't be confused ITI are not paying 70%, this is a performance based incentive and this information can be found on their website. Just as many other universities in the US they offer these incentives during the recruitment process and performance is assessed every semester. One slip can prove very costly and speaking from experience I fell victim to this and it was very costly a lot more than the 30%. I would like to see these students further their education but be very careful

`People we should stop making excuses for the government. We are paying the government to SERVE US, the youth need help. We are in the 21st century, in the computer age, in the technological age, everything take a minute to be accessed. The government has ALL the mechanism available to them, they have ALL the technocrats paying and available to them, they have not one but TWO ministers of education. There is a fully paid staffed ministry of education, also ministry of youth, also ministry of training etc, etc. So the excuse of time to investigate should NEVER be mentioned. If the government cannot tell us clearly, why they are not going ahead because they have investigated and found out the whole matter is a scum by giving us the facts. THen why should we find excuses for them. Why should you talk about vetting and students with only CXC when you heard the students were chosen from SALCC, i know a student personally who came first in her class at SALCC. as a matter of fact any student from St Lucia who pass through the five forms in a secondary school in St Lucia will do very well in any college in the USA, he or she do not have to do very well at CXC. I can prove that to you. I did not do to well at my GCE exam but i graduate on the DEAN'S list in the USA. My cousin did not do so well also and he did his MASTER'S in the UK straight out of high school.

Another opportunity to address the needs of our youth can be easily missed by the government, that is, if they do not assist those students who are obviously passionate about the acquisition of quality education from one of the US top schools. Who will bell the cat in this instance? Can Montoute or PM King see a need to provide our students (our youth) with an opportunity of a lifetime? We'll find out soon if protocol can be negotiated on behalf of our youth or can it only be negotiated for carnival or other business ventures.

This so called government has shown on many instances that they will not help or deal with anyone who criticize or do not support them. We have to look at the Robby Skeete situation. King is very week to let the ministers control him, i believe it is because Dr Karl Max said the ministers have no respect to the PM, they are refusing the scholarships, not realizing they are not hurting DR Karl but the students.

RISE must be commended for opening up these precious scholarship opportunities for young Saint Lucians. It would be reckless and irresponsible for anyone (without the facts) to claim that the Government is dragging its feet on the matter. Due diligence is necessary and it takes time. If we look back on the issues that have propped up with the Cuba Scholarship program we would realize how important it is for Government to ensure it's not dealing with a "jab en sac" situation here. For if God forbid, anything should go wrong Government will have to step in. With this in mind, I can only hope Government is using all the resources at its disposal (including those at the UN and Washington Missions) to thoroughly examine the scholarship offer and ensure that if there are any risks involved that these are acceptable risks.

I just brought up that point and you still talking about "jab en sac" It is not very difficult for the government to investigate the whole affair. They have the man power and equipment to do that in one minute. So STOP looking for excuses for the government.

EGOES AND COLOURS (red or yellow), when can our island be free of those two extremely destructive evils? Dr. King can afford to send his own kids to university so at the end of the day it remains to be seen who will be the real losers.

PRIME MINISTER STEPHEHSON KING WILL NOT MAKE A FUSS ABOUT HELPING THESE YOUNG PEOPLE, BECAUSE HIS CABINET DOES NOT HAVE MANY EDUCATED PEOPLE EG GUY JOSEPH, HE SAID EDUCATION IS NOT IMPORTANT.
PRIME MINISTER KING ONLY HAVE A G.C.E IN RELIGIOUS KNOWLEDGE SO EDUCATION IS NOT IMPORTANT TO HIM.

The info as one individual stated is right there on the college website, why not negotiate for the spring semester or next fall. Does that not make more sense? If these individuals are really interested in doing better for themselves then a few months will not be too long to wait. As a matter of fact it will give them more time to make sure everything is in order when they leave.
@ graduate on dean's list, don't make it sound as if it is soo easy as if it is something is wrong with the university you went to because it takes hard work, lots of dedication and the ability to overcome peer pressure. Knowing you have a loan to pay and your mother or aunty house is at stake is enough motivation to do well.

Don't mind http://www.iit.edu/
They offer their programs as special deals to fill their classes, not to help the bright Lucians.

Can you believe this guy who claims Government can evalaute the ITI offer in 1 minute? Is this guy for real? Kenny evaluated Rochamel in one month and look what happened.

Anonymous said...

I never said government can evaluate the offer in one minute, what i said was, it can take one minute to click a mouse to get the information needed, a phone can also take a minute to be connected. That is what i meant about that minute thing, i never said they must take a minute to evaluate everything. We all know that is impossible, i also said is we are in a technological world and the government has enough man power to make anything happen in any short space of time, if they really want it to happen. So stop making excuses for the government, they never wanted to help the students.

Anonymous said...

Why are we remembering to bring back Rochamel which happened more than a decade ago, at every chance we get? I find that very surprising when we have a government now in office who is creating mistakes after mistakes, scandals after scandals right under our eyes and we never remember to mention them, but we could remember something that happened more than decade ago. I wander what what are the motives of you people? St Lucians know about Rochamel, they voted out the SLP because of Rochamel, so now we must move on and study what is happening in the country NOW.

Is IIT asking for 75 applications and then they will pick a few students from that application pool. It sounds like IIT has a separate application process after they get the applicants information.

http://www.iit.edu/undergrad_admission/apply/presidential_scholarships.shtml

"Effective immediately, Illinois Institute of Technology invites the Presidents and Academic Deans of a select group of community colleges and the Executive Directors of community organizations throughout the country to nominate up to 8-12 graduating 2010 students or alumni from their institutions to join the 1st cohort of Presidential Community College Scholars at IIT."

The current class-size of IIT is about 600 students.
http://www.iit.edu/undergrad_admission/overview/
"IIT pairs the educational and cultural experiences of America's Second City with the small feel of an undergraduate population of just over 2300"
With 75 students, that would be more than 10% of the class.

Also is applying for the spring semester also a possibility.

That so called government know full well their live is very short when it comes to being in office, so they do not even care, they do not mind ignoring the youth boldface for everyone to see.

Yes, the govt should help in these situations but why just the govt? Why not raise at least half the funds in the rpivate sector? I'm sure many civic-minded people and corporations would step up. Why doesn't Tyrone Maynard and the NWU contribute financially instead of complaining about govt? They certainly charge enough dues and should start "giving back".
