I am deeply saddened and absolutely angry at the news about the 8-year-old of La Clery who was murdered in her bed during an alleged home invasion by gunmen. I now ask the question: Now that our young children are the recepients of the wrath of persons reeking revenge on their fellowmen/women where does that leave us as a nation?

Violence has escalated by leaps and bounds in Saint Lucia and it appears that no one is safe anymore. We are being held hostage by a breed of criminal whose modus operandi is "kill or be killed." Respect for the law is at an all time low and while the criminal element continue to play as if they are in the "wild wild west" our police officers continue to wring their hands helplessly not knowing what to do to alleviate the problem of rising violence.

I say, it's time for Saint Lucians to learn to defend themselves against these lawless characters who invade our homes under the darkness of night and in the streets in broad daylight. If criminals band together why then can't the so-called law abiding citizens of this country look out for each other?

If the death of this innocent child does not wake us what will? Apportioning blame does not make the situation any better. This child did not deserve to die that way and I hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice one way or another.

No one in Saint Lucia is immune to acts of violence so let us stop playing the role of the ostrich...head in the sand and bottoms up. It's time for the citizenry to get up and Fight!

This island does not belong to criminals and we should not allow them to take charge of it.

May little Marissa rest in peace and to those who took her life, may they never find peace until they own up to their transgression.
