I like this piece....gives me a new perspective on who Peter Josie is..ha!
Sir when was politics ever out of public servant/government industrial strife. I really cannot see how there can ever be a divorce between the two if only for the fact that the opposing party is the government.
The question that should occupy our minds is whether the demands being made by the unions are legitimate and reasonable.
In my mind the demands have been given legitimacy because they are not new demands but the are based on promises made by the government from an iron clad agreement born of negotiations.
I do not discount the fact that the prevailing winds of ecomomic hardship have changed the realities on the ground and hence the reason that both sides must temper their stance.
Man, woman or child as leader in these circumstances must show leadership and grapple with the situation as needs be.
Your point is well taken, however it seems ironic that one of the persons in the forefront of support for this "impasse"is former president of the SLTA Virginia Albert.Is she also a boy trying to be a man?????
Oh Peter! I am laughing my you- know-what out! I doth think the article is empty...but I am laughing because I think you are being your usual clever self and are merely playing with sentiments. Who will argue with you about the inclusion of women and gender equality? But you have failed miserably to show any real connection between the male ego/the exclusion of women and the current industrial debacle. And you are famous for always using your little anecdotes. As the Trinis would say, "Its all mamaguy" Peter!
I wonder whether there was even ever the event which you relate here in your little anecdote...lol... I know how clever you are!
There are a few people in our community who do not let a good impasse go to waste.
Some of them have not stood on a soap box for years and this presents itself. Are you kidding me?
Inustrial relations relics from both sides dust off their old play books and join the fray.
People must understand that present day economic realities the world over makes a old thinking and theories redundant and obolete.
It is now time for a new dispensation in industrial relations practices especially as it relates to small, open, and dependent economies like ours.
Dont get me wrong fighting exploitation of labour never goes out of style. That is however, not what obtains in this impasse.
Wow! Is this "Thee Peter Josie". Wow! What can I say, I am impressed. I grew up hearing nothing good about you but here you are with a positive perspective on the Civil Servants/Union issue.
I will have to disagree with you on your comment "there is much more than politics driving a wedge between gov't and the unions". We lucians are not naive. All Unions, doesn't matter what country, is influenced by politics "period".
Interestingly, the civil servants have had their issues throughout the reign of the previous administration but sort to express their disconcertion now. HMMM!
Thankfully, our kids are exposed to the ways of the world. Encouraging them to be free thinkers. However, we desparetly need to work on our education system. If we want our men to acknowledge that there are indeed women who are much more capable than they are, we need to start by changing their perception at a very young age.
We need to break that cycle.
