Let's have that debate on the merits of the death penalty again. One of the arguments that opponents of the death penalty make is that the death penalty is not a deterrent to brutal crime.
I'd like to counter that the death penalty was never designed to deter crime but to PUNISH those who commit murder.
As a matter of fact, no law seeks to deter criminal behaviour. The laws are designed to let the citizens know what is and is not permissible behaviour as a member of a society.
I challenge anyone to tell me that he/she stopped a particular habit as a kid after being punished for it once. I recall as a youngster I was notorious for making fun of people, who were for the most part older than me, in the village. I got punished for it every time they reported me to my mother. I only grew out of the habit.
Society has to put mechanisms in place to provide boundries for us, if we are to continue our existence as a civilization in harmony. Hence the laws of the land.
The punishment must fit the crime. Thus what you suffer for stealing coconuts is different to what you suffer for shooting someone with premeditation.
There is no more just and fitting punishment for a senseless, barbaric, and brutal crime than the death penalty. In this case the perpetrator is well deserving of it. I rest my case.
