Compromise, and put country first

The impasse between the government and the public servants cannot all be blamed on the latter. The government is equally, or perhaps should get the lion's share of the blame.
If my memory serves me well, when this seemingly incomprehensible offer was made to the workers, the present economic downturn was already forecasted. Government chose to disregard the signs and fell prey to what I'd call economic blackmail. Or better yet chose to appease the workers with a promise that was doomed to being kept.
To say that teachers have been given the short end of the stick when it comes to salaries and cnditions of service, is an understatement. This has always been the case in St. lucia and is so the world over. Teaching was the best work I ever did but one of the worst jobs I ever had.
The members of the noble profession have been under paid and underappreciated from time immemorial. While, I think that the government's offer was made on a whim or based on unrealistic revenue estimates, that does not completely absolve them of blame.
We all wish for cooler heads to prevail on both sides of the divide. Teachers are expected to juxtapose their just demands against a bleak economic situation. Compromise is not a one way street.
I don't where you are observing from but I don't think it is St. Lucia because these union workers DO NOT "have it good". The government needs to assume majority of the blame for not leading by example. How can teachers agree to postpone their well deserved increase while the government officials continues to behave childishly and waste the countries resources?
It would be a good thing if we could stop posting as "Anonymous" and identify ourselves by either our own names or some creative handle. (Use the Name/URL) bubble.
In that way we can respond to partcular posts, to either clarify a point that was missed, or further illucidate someone on a particular topic or subject matter.
Just a suggestion.
P.S. I never said teachers had or have it good. Certainly not in my first post.
