Nice. Richard Frederick is quite effective.
It's nice only in picture. What about the stench coming from beyond it. The smelly, water infested, opened gutters all over. No sidewalks, or if any, they are time bombs.
How effective is that?
Hmmm, well it's a good first step in rejuvenating Castries, especially with the architecture having a Caribbean design rather than the incongruous New York style design of the ECFH building.
With this development in place we can now tackle the stench and drains to improve the area further.
Well, lets hoping the do, Zeigy...no use having nice buildings with rats, dogs, vagrants, etc. roaming those perceived nice buildings...
This is only vote catching, shallow on the surface and desperate development. Where is the vision as the last contributer said, for the rats, dogs, side walks, dirty gutters and rivers, vagrants and the side walk vendors?
Where is Frederick vision for all the drug pusher less than a mile from central police station under the CDC buildings? Where is Frederick vision as housing minister for all the drug and crime infested ghettoes around the City of Castries? Will he provide better housing for these people? That is what we want, not superficial unoccupied buildings in Castries.
Well I went through the budgetary allocations for 2010 but I didn't see anything for the Ministry of Housing.
What's the man supposed to do? We need to look at whether housing is a priority for this government and whether Frederick is getting the support or if he is working tirlessly to do what he can for Central Castries.
By the way, you can't just displace street vendors. What are the people supposed to do? They need to earn an income. They are St. Lucians just like you who deserve an education and a way to earn a living. Stop treating the poor like they are some kind of problem to be pushed aside.
Zeigy, I agree with you on most of your points, but i disagree with you when you said you saw nothing in the budget for mr Frederick housing ministry. The government should not work in isolation, mr Frederick is a member of cabinet and also a minister, he suppose to be part of the top policies maker in the country, therefore his input should be pat of the budget, so nobody should say that there is nothing in the budget for Frederick housing ministry. That only only shows how this government works.
Well, I didn't read the entire document but I did look in the areas where I though I would find what allocations if any were given to the housing ministry.
I could be wrong because, after all, how is a man suppose to run a ministry without financing?

Good point #6...indeed, where is Frederick? But Frederick is head of the problems...seeking drugs dealer's support, especially those in the ghetto, mingled, ate, partied with them when he campaigned and ran for election.
These are the same things the politicians from Jamaica are doing - openly appoves and seeks the support and approval of well know drug barons/dealers from Jamaica to win votes and elections...So singlehandedly, Frederick has brough a new concept of vote winning in Fair Helen...Kenny Anthony was right when he said it would be a sad day for St Lucia...When Frederick entered the political arena...ANYONE PROVE KENNY ANTHONY WRONG...
The results: division and opened warfare on the populace of Jamaica.Drug barons and some politican aligned themselves agains the police...for obvious reasons. St Lucia to follow pretty soon due to Frederick.
It does seem like the threat of garrison politics in St. Lucia is very real.
But according to the bible:
"Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
"But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
"And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just."

So which is Frederick? Budding Jamaican politician or philanthropist?
I outlined my proposals regarding Castries in previously blogs before. I have made many sound and logical suggestions. However, the following is what I proposed in my previous blog.
1.Take down Port Station and the repulsive vendors arcade next to it and build a new arcade on the water with rules and regulations to be followed by any legal means necessary whether the vendors like it or not.
The Port Station section of this complex will house direct tourism vendors and the section where the current arcade is will house all other local vendors in close proximity of the Castries market and area.
Also, the section of land by the parking lot which few people use can also be used for more building of local arcade space for vendors. Clean up the main Castries market to accommodate more vendors and build anywhere else in the immediate area where vendors can be allocated. Relocate the disgusting shacks and filth behind the Government buildings to elsewhere which is remnants of Conway and build more facilities for tourism where locals would profit.
All other vendors MUST be removed from the street of Castries to create a clean and safe city to manoeuvre. This word is correct. It is the French & British version and not the American which is “maneuver”
In other cities all around the world, no one is allowed to just set up shop wherever and whenever they want. There is a complex process of city codes, licenses, health approvals and personal responsibility to govern oneself as a license vendor to the public and that includes hygiene.
2. Clear out the useless Gardens area and build a state of the art bus terminal where all public transportation MUST convene to do business and remove all minibuses off the streets of Castries. You will no doubt have much opposition from unreasonable, uneducated and primitive dinosaurs of minibus drivers and owners who never adhere to any rules or regulations. However, they wouldn't have any choice if the government made it mandatory by any legal means necessary.
Then the city of Castries can introduce parking meters all through out the city to create new revenue for the city. The city MUST also make sure that traffic tickets and all other tickets are process and paid. Otherwise the perpetrators will have an increase on their fines and the privileges of driving or operating a vehicle will be prohibited and subject to more fines or prison time if there’s no resolution.
Remember, the city of Castries MUST have many public restrooms for tourism and locals in order to control and manage a healthy St Lucia. These restrooms MUST be monitored to prevent crime and maintain cleanliness at all times.
The end result would just be a gigantic step in cleaning up Castries and trying to catch up with the 21st century, since dear "Mother Helen" is at least 40 years in arrears of progress despite all the so-called visible prosperity by those who have.
Government should never make deals with the public when it comes to "crime" "progress" "safety" and "protection for all, especially "tourism" which butters our bread in order to survive and prosper.
Law is law. Rules are rules. Regulations are regulations. They must all be followed and obeyed by all citizens regardless of status or influence, brilliance or ignorance or agreement or disagreement, everyone benefits.

Dantes, I agree...see, regular people as you, I, et al, could come up with logical, but simple suggestions, that, only if implemented, could and would have a significant and beneficial impact on our lives.
But Dantes, don't count on it, the powers that be are clueless about your rightful suggestions...too busy travelling uselessly, with entourages stretching from Castries to Babylon, where as these monies could simply be used to implement your suggestions...thanks for the postings.
Or the powers that be are, just like you and I are doing, looking out for a way to stay in power by making the most vote-catching policies even if it is a step in the wrong direction.
Many of these politicians have no other source of income close to what they get in politics. If we are to see change we have to let them know that we support the difficult decisions. We have to engage the same demographic the politicians engage to let the people know that XYZ is the way forward because ABC is only a short term solution to catch your vote.
Either that our we start getting people who have nothing to lose by entering politics.
Can somebody update me with the progress of the Marigot housing project, that Frederick started?
