The vast majority of drivers tend to drive as if they have to be somewhere else by yesterday, causing the roads to be very unsafe for both pedestrians and other drivers sharing it with them.
Nothing is so important that you deliberately put another person's life at risk. Overtaking on bends, driving down the median to get ahead, tailgating, and speeding, are just some of the dangerous habits being exhibited on a daily basis on the St Lucian roads.
The expression " you take your life in your hands" is truly apt here. It is extremely scary being a passenger whilst trying to enjoy the natural beauty the island has to offer because you're too busy wondering whether you'll actually get to arrive at your destination, or whether you should get out of the vehicle whilst you're still alive.
Whenever I'm on the island I ask myself why do the drivers feel the need for speed? The net gain is definitely not worth the effort.
Sharing the roads in St Lucia with drivers who are either inexperienced or choose not to follow the rules of the road is the biggest disservice they can do to the tourism. Visitors from industrialized countries are simply not used to this wanton recklessness and deliberate disregard for life feel very unsafe being passengers using the public transportation system because it is so unregulated.
