Editor,
Can one not ask equally that in such trying times, with less grant funding, we should seek grant funding to build a statue? I completely disagree with this suggestion as it once again appears you seem aloof to the realities of what is being called the worst global economic slump since WWII. I would like to humbly suggest that we are better off spending much less money in commissioning a Saint Lucia History Book, perhaps focusing on the period from emancipation to the modern era. I am very sure Sir John will fine due prominence in something that can be used by all Saint Lucians, not just those who pass by the waterfront. It would also be a recognition of the importance of education/knowledge first and not copper or bronze.

They should implement VAT, for example in Canada there is sales tax and the government uses that money for social/public programs, paying public servants, fixing roads etc.

Then they can compromise by reducing duty taxes, thereby inducing flow. Comodities would be cheaper, people would have more purchasing power and the standard of living would improve.
