It was time... hope they actually start it soon! Those long lines and over heating arrival terminal building isn't a nice thing.

Redevelopment of the airport is needed. I am not sure we need jet bridges at Hewanorra, but we can certainly do with more space, more security checkpoints, immigration and custom points, etc. I do hope that this project gets off the ground sooner rather than latter as long as the proper procedure and legal protocols are followed.

Ahjay, how do you like having to travel for 10 hours only to be drenched by a downpour on arrival? Welcome to the modern, convenient, comfortable world.
My philosophy is, if you're not willing to go all the way then don't even start the journey.

Airport redevelopment is not my issue. The process of scrutiny for contract purposes is my concern.

Ahjay, it's the 21st century, you need jet bridges in those new airports. Walking in the rain isn't nice or waiting for the rain to ease off.

its bout time they got this project off the ground my question is where can i see those designs im dieing to see them for months nowguess monday news will show it :( but as for jet bridges im all for it modern up to dat airport u need that stuff in place or maybe all dont have to have th bridges but o well im still happy

Time to get Emerates flying from Dubai via London with a huge Airbus 380 to St. Lucia. Rich Arabs are welcome in St. Lucia. They spend en invest a lot.

I do not want anyone to believe that I would not like to see a modern airport with all amenities such as jet bridges. However, I am saying that in my opinion if there is one of the proposed improvements that could be left out at this time with reference to cost/finance, it should be the jet bridges. You made a very good point in support of your argument when you spoke about the possibility of getting drenched in the rain. I would also like to say that jet bridges will be of significant help to handicaps and disables. In fact, I believe that this aspect of it is more important than the rain. But we are aware that everything comes with a cost, and we know that everything cannot be done at once. As soon as we begin to see the additional charges that will applied to our tickets towards airport improvement, some of us might have a change of opinion towards much need amenities such as jet bridges.

What's the point of having a modern airport without jet bridges? Ahjay, you have 'lowered expectations'. Elevate yourself, I mean how much of the $140 million is going to the bridges, together, I don't even think that cost a million bucks.

here is is the links to the plan. Beautiful!!

Ahjay said...

I guarantee you that it will cost well over a million dollars (EC) for each jet bridge. The airlines will be charged to use this facility which will be passed on to us the travelers.

Anonymous said...

Ahjay, when I said $140 million, I meant US dollars otherwise I would have said $381 million. Again,I do not think that the bridges will cost more than a million US dollars.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the link, it's an awesome plan.

The bridges are also good for security since no one will be able to enter the plane without going through tight security. So it's a win win situation.

There is nothing overly impressive with the design. It does not in any way capture my interest or in any way stand out from other airport terminals. Grantley Adams still would appear more impressive than this proposed terminal. In fact, The current architectural features of the current terminal with its roof "peaks" speaks more to the nature of Saint Lucia than the proposed design. Is it worth US$140 million? NO. I was really expecting more information. Still no airport master plan available for download? I URGE SLASPA to reconsider their way forward on airport expansion. The existing terminal was completed in 1993 and so is still less than 20 yrs. It should be incorporated into a phased expansion at Hewanorra, perhaps to handle regional traffic, and eventually it can be demolished - perhaps 15 yrs down the line. Alas, unless if we see the master plan its hard to make truly informed critiques of what is on offer.

A big mistake! The computer-generated design I've seen of the terminal building is ugly. It is something a traveler would expect to see in Iceland not a tropical paradise island as beautiful as St Lucia. Furthermore, could you imagine how hot that space would get if the air conditioning system failed even momentarily? Please seriously rethink this essential factor!

....and A&M are still in the frame.

The project should be developed in Phases and put out to open tender. Transplanting a US style airport in St Lucia is wrong. Where is the feasibility study? Where is the airport development plan? Where are the projected energy requirements for running this new airport? SLASPA is as silent as ever and yet they want us to buy into this project.

How can we commit to EC$+400m for this project when we are told nothing regarding the procurement process and those behind it.

WTF is a US styled airport, because it has jet bridges? seriously. All modern airports now have jet bridges from Trinidad to kingston to st. Marteen have jet bridges. and even Barbados is planning to add jetbridges soon. The existing terminal was made in 1993 yes, for 300,000 people. Last year UVF handle 460,000 not including the 56,000 intransits. Phase it in.. when the problem with needing a parallel taxi way would only get worst?. NOt even parking for jet aircraft. Long lines at the terminal how on God's earth do you expect to open up on that terminal anymore?. Have you seen the long lines on busy days with people standing up in the hot sun can't get into the arrival hall?. There isn't another choice but to build one. In less than 7 years the airport will be handling twice the number of people it seeing now and if they close Vigie like was hinted on friday we might see triple that traffic. AT some point you have to go ahead and build a brand new terminal and now is the right time.

Hulla said...

that is great.Let us hope that there will be enough traffic to make it pay.
As things go,the planning is in order.
Jean no doubt you had posotive input into all this. The next time i am in slu,i will come to congratulate you.
How many of us remember that the Hewanorra Airport is the conception of Sir John Compton ?
how well i remember when those big canadian earth moving equiptment were doing all the earth moving work, back there in 1968 or thereabouts!

Hulla, you just had to throw your daddy Compton in it, eh?

How can you propose to build a MAJOR airport without a MAJOR highway leading to the MAJOR hotels & businesses in the north?
Barbados, for example built their infrastructure before improving on their airport; so did Jamaica.

Anonymous said...

Excellent point LLL, however, right now St.Lucia has to be prepared to take an even greater risk and think even bigger!; which was precisely how Compton took St. Lucia out of its dark ages. If Vigie airport is eliminated and-or turned into an avenue of Rio de Janeiro style luxury hotels, a world-class 4-lane highway between Castries and Vieux Fort - with long tunnels and viaduct-bridges - would be necessary to link the north-south in 30 minutes max. Originally, SLASPA boasted that the new HIA would be the best in the southern Caribbean, rivaling even Trinidad's airport, as well as serve as a major regional transshipment hub. St.Lucians, please do some due diligence and check out the stats of some of the new Caribbean airports - from Trinidad in the south to the Bahamas in the north, and several others in between, because if you did, you would soon realize that our projected expenditure of US$140million is practically nothing compared with some of these other facilities, and that our real costs should be closer to US$300 million - executed in 2 major phases. The second phase should include the extension and use of the second runway the US left us. St.Lucia this is your moment! Seize it now! Don’t be afraid, you will get the investors – they usually prefer big ideas especially since this one would pay off! To quote the song,” It’s now or never"! With the sort of infrastructure I've mentioned above, at last St.Lucia will be able to take its rightful leadership role in the Caribbean, only then.

Anonymous said...

Barbados is frigging flat so it's easier to build highways, do you know how many mountains they'd have to cut and how many bridges they'd have to build in Saint Lucia?

Anonymous said...

Tunnels will have to be built.

Anonymous said...

... and I second that: TUNNELS ARE THE WAY TO GO IN ST.LUCIA! Maybe one or a consortium of the two Chinas, the Arab Emirates, and Venezuela will provide most of the finance for this essential highway – St.Lucia cannot fully develop without it.

Anonymous said...

And what happens with all the tremors or earthquake that we get? And how many tunnels would they have to build?

Anonymous said...

The sky could also fall some time today, tomorrow or next year. . .
Don't be ruled by irrational fears!

i agree with the idea of an entire new terminal but there are alot of things still need to be shown to us here. where is the new cargo shed going to be built where are the designs for that what about or preparedness for a disaster god forbid.the seach an rescue boats & helicopters, fire trucks an ambulances an st jud will have to be built within the same time as the airport. we will need a highway to the north as well how ever its goin to be done is beyond me but it must be done.i dont see vigie closing down but i do see it down grading, there was plans in the makin if im not mistaken for a new terminal on the other side to the back of the runway leaving the old terminal for fbo. that can be considered with flight from close caribean islands like barbados martinque grenada st vincent etc. i would really like to see the entire master plan for hia i truely believe both runways will be used if we are going to do hubing an hey how about a name changed from hewanorra to John Compton International (j.C International)

Please don't make me puke, Compton hated the south with a passion. Let the man rest in peace, will you? Don't slap us in the face...I beg you.

Anonymous said...

Do not get too excited about the air bridges. Barbados does not have them.

The point is where is the feasibility study that justifies the costs and size. We need the facts that justify the proposal air bridge and all.

You lost, bridges are in....period.
