The Ghettorization Of Saint Lucia

The most significant contributor to this is adoption and passive acceptance of 'anything goes' as long as you can claim that this is required in order to get by.

For those who are not Gilligans, or who have left our shores, it is this type of internal corrosion of our values system that is degrading the quality of life of Guyanese society and St. Lucian society on a daily basis.

St Lucians, having accepted this 'anything goes' approach to life as the guiding principle of their day to day activities, we have seen us embracing criminals and the criminal activities of drug pushers and identity con-artists like our Foreign Minister and the Drug Baron in the Cabinet.

With trust disappearing fast in our culture, we are seeing too, that foreign direct investment has literally shriveled. Our culture is so toxic that we can only trust doing business with the same party colours. How depressing!

We, the people and in the turn, the country is no longer a good place to do business in, or the people to do business with. Try getting to have a positive outlook on life to the extent of improving the environment physically, culturally, and economically. Result: more unemployment, greater creation of economically-depressed areas, and more ghettos!

The reason for St Lucians littering is the same one that explains their tolerance for mediocrity and corruption in government. Sad to say, of late Mr Josie - and the other Kenny hating UWP converts - have been adding to that mediocrity and corruption in government by not speaking out against it. The answer is right below your very nose Mr Josie. Garbage in government, garbage in the streets! We like it so!

Peter, are you for real! You must first start with the ghettorization of the present government. Lucians elected representatives that are comparable to their environment.
Now, tell us, who did you vote for in the last election? Ha! Now you understand.

Peter I must admit that I have been one who has chastised you in the past for politicizing your articles. Well now I can say that this is a very constructive article. Well done! Lair ee bon dee ee bon! lol
I hope other St Lucians whether they like you or not will come out and give credit where its due.I don't need to say more, the article speaks volumes for itself. If anyone is critical about this article, they are not truly St Lucian. We need more articles like this from you and others instead of the tired politicized lines we get week after week.

We do not need any article form Josie, all Josie try to do is to fool us, because he believe we are stupid. I will tell you why, it does not make any sense for Josie to sit on the sidelines now and complain about problems in St Lucia. Which he know full was created by the UWP government. We fought to hard with Josie to remove the UWP to put Josie in the position to make all these changed he is now complaining about. What he did was to slap us in the face and fought back to return that same UWP into office. Now he is UWP biggest supporter and he is pretending to blame somebody or trying to complain about the mess.

Josie know full well that a country does not become clean by a fluke, miracle or just by the good nature of it people. Human being it does not matter who they are will litter. The only way that could or will be controlled is grow up the nation with strict litter LAWS where penalties are strictly enforces and education. Proper and timely gabage collection is also very important. How do you believe places like Canada is so clean today?

Another reason I will never agree with Josie is, SLP was in office they began keeping the country very clean with the STEP programme, we were begining to be the envy of the caribbean. I will never say it was perfect, they even cleaned our beaches. Josie was one of those who again fought to put back UWP into office, not he is complaining the city and the country is dirty. Josie you can fool some of the people sometimes, but not all the people all the times.

Thank you for the wonderful inspiring article. We need more articles like this. St. Lucians need to be told day after day and FINED for the tossing and dumping of garbage. The message needs to be on TV, and taught to children in school so that THEY can educate their parents. I am sure most people do not read the paper.

I do not live on the Island, I am an occasional tourist. I am so saddened when I see a beautiful Island chocked full of garbage. Castries, the capital is a disgrace. People coming in on cruse ships just want to get back on the ship and leave. We are tormented by taxi drivers, begging and chaos. No decent coffee shops to sit in.

Rodney Bay, a tourist spot, is also disgusting and extremely repulsive. Sitting out and having a coffee at the coffee shop across from the Lime is impossible due to the horrible odour from the drain/ditch close by. It is a health hazard, rat infested and breeding dengue ridden mosquitoes. It's been there for years, with NO ONE doing anything about it. Does St. Lucia have a Health Department?

When swimming in the sea on Reduit Beach one encounters plastic bags in the water and the beach after the weekend is extremely littered. There are no garbage bins to put anything in.

St. Lucia is past its sell by date. A lovely Island full of people who have no respect or pride in their country.

Yes you all could congratulate God for writing good articles, that will never solve our problems. What we need is ACTION like countries like Canada. As I have said and will continue to say Josie was in the position to create changes and he spoiled it. So it is a waste of time writing about the problem. A lot of people know how to write, speak about or describe the problems, but cannot solve it when given the chance. And Josie is one of them.

I have had the good fortune in my life to visit small and large communities all over the world. It is a pleasure to go to small communities anywhere where decency is the order of the day. Whether in a town in France or the Hamptons in Long Island all these places attract a high standard of tourist because they are clean, friendly and populated by decent people who treat visitors with courtesy.

In St. Lucia you do not know even in a place like Rodney Bay what kind of filth you will see on the ground, which drug seller will approach you or even whether a gun will go off next to you while liming.

St. lucia loses at least 5 -10% of its potential GDP every year because of low standard from how we drive on the roads to the state of our roads to the cleanliness on our streets.

A sad reality for a tourist destination.

One of the Wikileak documents from the US State Department said a lot about Kenny Anthony showing what we in St. Lucia already know.
This is a direct quote from the State Department when Kenny Anthony was still St. Lucia's Prime Minister:

“C).....post (the US Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados)
considers PM Anthony an unreliable partner whose commitment
to security responsibilities consists of self-congratulation
and cosmetic solutions such as replacing local police
commanders with British police officers (Ref A), without
insuring the logistical or political support the law
enforcement personnel need. Post's interagency Law
Enforcement Working Group believes that St. Lucia's security
forces are actually one of the better performing groups in
the eastern Caribbean. The forces' effectiveness could
benefit, however, from the replacement of several individuals
in leadership positions. The Prime Minister has not seen fit
to make those changes.

¶11. (C) As in the matter of the delayed Article 98 signature, PM Anthony refuses to take responsibility for realizing security commitments while declining to delegate or relinquish the authority needed to meet them. In observing his interaction with his own citizenry throughout the day, Ambassador Kramer concluded that PM Anthony is not interested in acting locally or leading globally; his sole focus seems to be on maintaining his position rather than providing a
vision for St. Lucia's future."

So the Americans thought of Kenny exactly what St. Lucians kenw then and know now:

C).....post (the US Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados)
considers PM Anthony an unreliable partner whose commitment
to security responsibilities consists of self-congratulation
and cosmetic solutions

"PM Anthony is not interested in acting locally or leading globally; his sole focus seems
to be on maintaining his position rather than providing a vision for St. Lucia's future."

It is all about narcissistic Kenny and not St. Lucians.

We need much more of those articles and less of the political stuff. Great job Mr. Josie!
The problem is a lark of National pride, with Tourism being the main stay of the economy (or maybe rats are the main stay of the economy...lol) I once met a crowd of tourist who came off the ship wanting to sit down somewhere to have a taste our local beer but unfortunately I could not direct them to a desent place.

There was much talk about converting the Boulvard into a sitting area with bars and chairs so the tourist could sit, have a cold beer and observe what is going on but this has yet to bear fruit.

We need an island wide G.I. Party (massive clean up campaign),resurfacing of side walks, flower planting, highway signs, as well as the maintanance of these signs regularly.

National Pride is what we are lacking because the tourist are watching and divulging information to friends and relatives back home.

When guests are welcomed to our homes we ensure that everything is order so why can't we tidy up the island because the tourist are our guests.

I was on the island this past May and indeed found the city to be very conjested. Now this is nothing that can't be fixed with a
five year redevelopment plan. But most importantly the PEOPLE must
feel that they have a stake in the
future of the country;and with
visionary leadership the future of
St Lucia looks promising. Lucians,
love the land that gave you birth!

It seems we've had a number of narcissistic PM's. Who could forget Compton who defied the people's will and called two elections in one year because HE was not comfortable with the thin mandate the people had given HIM. When HE didn't get his way, HE further defied the people's will by cajoling Neville Cenac into crossing the floor! But at least, like Kenny, Compton had leadership qualities.
King is holding on to power by any means necessary, country be damned! His only skill is to bend to the demands of all of his rogue ministers. Even when he tried to double cross Richard by using Janine it backfired and what he got was a slap instead.
If the country survived Compton's narcissism, it can survive Kenny's. But King's crass narcissism and weak leadership have brought us to the brink!

It seems, given the latest visa episode the same American government is well aware of that too!
