I am not sure that such a general comment is applicable to all friends. As with any business venture we should use judgement about our friends ability to deliver and how they treat work.

I would expect a friend who was a good business person to take the opportunity to do a good job, and hence have you as a good reference for further work with your wider circle.

Have you ever suggested one of your friends who did a bad job to someone else?
