Anonymous said...: Tourism IS a fickle industry, particularly for Saint Lucia. Chastanet compares ourselves with the BVI, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos which are very different in many respects. For one, they are all closer to the North American continent, the BVI and Turks/Caicos have small populations particularly for their land mass. Tourism can easily make a dent in these economies. They are also both british territories with a sizeable base in financial services. We in no way can be compared to the Bahamas that has vast resources when it comes to land, beach and oceanfront. These countries are vastly different.
There is clear potential for tourism expansion in Saint Lucia over the next 5-10 years but if we aren't careful we easily run the risk of over-development which erodes any advantage we may have currently. We must think beyond that and that realistically means HUMAN DEVELOPMENT (i.e. Education and Training) particularly in sciences, technical skills and technology. Tourism growth will be a boon for a while but it can never be more than just a part of the answer to realizing sustaianable economic development.; March 16, 2009 at 6:59 PM
