That's a really idiotic statement by Andre Paul. Teachers are underpaid for the amount of work they have to do and they should fight for their well deserved increase.

I DONT BELIEVE THAT THIS STATEMENT IS IDIOTIC AT ALL. THE STRIKE IS SELFISH INDEED STUDENT'S AS WELL AS OTHERS WILL SUFFER BECAUSE OF THE TEACHER'S INABILITY &(SELFISHNESS)TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT AFFORD CAN CAUSE TEMPORARY STAFF LIKE ME TO LOSE OUR JOBS. WHAT WILL YOU CALL THAT APART FROM SELFISH, MAYBE INCONSIDERATE WHICH PRETTY MUCH EXPRESSES THE SAMETHING.. TO ALL YOU PERMANENT TEACHER AN OTHER CIVIL SERVANT I AGREE THAT YOU MAY FEEL BETRAYED BY THE GOVERNMENT BUT LEAVING THE GOVERNMENT WITH NO OPTION BUT TO FIRE ME THAT JUST CUREL ...WIKED ...EVIL...

I WISH YOULL SUCCESS AS YOU STRIKE AS A MEANS OF GETTING YOUR INCREASE SO THAT I COULD LOSE MY JOB...i THANK YOU..

I am indeed appalled by Andre's statement as I "assumed" he would know better. To call teachers selfish amidst all the sacrifices they make for the nations children is an outcry. Teachers do have a right to strike if that is the way they can achieve their goal. Many of them have children, so are their children not being affected? If we as a nation keep thinking about who our actions will affect then nothing can happen. It takes the populace to put policies in place, through strikes such as these. Suffice to say I support the teachers 100% in getting the government to own up to its commitement. The prime minister needs to meet with all parties concern and see to it that an amicable solution can be reached.

I totally agree with Andre Paul and the third person who commented on this article. Their pay is no difference than 5yrs ago, so why now. Most times, public servants do those things because they know it is not easier to fire them. If they were working for private companies, I bet my last dollar they would not be acting the way they are now.

If anyone is selfish it's the government. Why don't they stop the useless spending and take 20% salary cuts? The government should lead by example but this clearly is not the case.

And to say their pay is no different from 5 years ago does not help your argument. Inflation has increased dramatically within the past five years significantly reducing purchasing power. That's all the more reason why the teachers need this increase.

The government with no INTEGRITY!!!. We teach our children that when you make promises you must keep them and if there are reasons why you will not be able to keep them you own up and say so early enough so as to give people time to decide accordingly. What do you expect of Stephenson King who carrys the mantra" its lucian or caribbean time " arrives at all meetings late, and does not have the courtesy to apologise for his lateness? If a man could spend 9 years out of politics and did not see it fitting to get as much as a "certificate" in an area of discipline what do you expect from him? The blind is leading the blind here people. He met President Obama right? Ok. Well President Obama said and I quote" education is no longer a pathway to opportunity, its a prerequisite. So its now stands to reason that he has NO RESPECT FOR EDUCATION TEACHERS!!!

After listening to the worst and most off-key budsget address I can recall what I would like to suggest to the teachers and civil servants is this: STRIKE ON! Clearly the government has shown no real intention that it plans on making cutbacks and more strategic spending. In fact overall expenditure is projected to increase by $50 mil to $1200+ mil. The presentation was full of deception: e.g. King quoted that between April and Sept 2008 government subsidized fuel to the tune of $13 million. Yet, according to my estimates, based on gazetted c-tax and daily consumption rates for gas and diesel, government between Oct 08 and Feb 09, not only wiped away that loss but made a profit in the region of $34 million. Nothing has changed. More of the same. STRIKE on teachers, the government can very well pay you what they've promised you. If they tell you they can't they simply don't have the brains to figure out the math. Mr. King, fire your advisors and while you're at it FIRE YOURSELF!

I totally agree with the last person. Why didn't the P.M tell the union what he was doing when he proclaimed to have been 'juggling' around to get cash to pay the public servants? This is just another of a number of untruths coming from the P.M.
