Once again the police have shot someone without regard to wether or not they have the right person, however I can't understand the mentality of the police who take a life before they ask questions, and then investigate the crime themselves so no one is ever taken to account. To take a life like this is murder and they should be tried for the crime they have committed. A gun should only be used if their is a threat to life from the gun man, clearly the police are too stupid to realise that they are the threat to life in most instances not the public. Many of these police purport to be Christians, can anyone tell me when it became ok for people to shoot others in cold blood, I hope they are haunted by the memory for the rest of their lives.
The police constantly ask for the support of the public, yet at the same time on many occasions they are the ones undertaking criminal activity. I say criminal activity because to kill someone in the way this guy was killed is murder. It does not matter whether it is the police who shoot him or not. Before the police open fire on anyone, they have to make a concerted effort to apprehend the individual with the least violence possible. If the police is at no threat then they have no reason to be shooting. The stray bullet can hit innocent by standers.
In this situation, should the police not verify that this is the individual they are looking for before murdering the person. Note there is no situation when the police should commit murder, despite it so frequently happens. Even if the individual was a felon, the police is obligated to make a conscious effort to apprehend the felon with as little injury as possible.
It is interesting to see what cover up the police media personnel will come up with this time. In the case where the senior officer was caught red handed with the parts of a stolen vehicle, it was said he was investigating. When the police shot an unarmed Yardie, he was talking too much (since when that is a crime). I can go on. But lets hear the police make more cover up stories in the name of improving their image. Maybe lying to the public will improve the police officers behavior. I thought the lawless policemen should be disciplined and proper measures put in place to ensure it does not repeat. But who knows, maybe I am wrong, covering up may be better.
Lose faith in the police? Is that what you want to instigate? This is part of a wider problem affecting the nation. Our people are not being firmly grounded in the values that enhance the quality of life.
In short we need to improve our education system to develop St. Lucians love for knowledge and solving social and national issues.
Punishing an officer who has only been a victim of our inadequate education system? Lose faith in the police? The only people who can keep us safe from other lawbreakers? Yeah, that worked out great for Jamaica!
I'd rather have an effective and inadequate police force than a corrupt one know one wants to work with. We can always work on the shortcomings.
To the Victim's Family:
Sue the Policemen and Police force in Paricular and the Government in General.
Unleash a sets of good attorneys (if there are any in St Lucia) and file suits.
Another death traps are the so Called "Tunnels" on the Millinium Higway...
THERE ARE PRACTICALLY NO LIGHTS (JUST A FEW LIGHTS IN EACH, ACTUALLY) IN THE TUNNELS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT, EVEN WITH YOUR BRIGHT LIGHTS ON, TO SEE ONCOMING VEHICLES.
Until there are lost of lives; rest assured it will remain so for a long, long, long time.
Was wondering why you posted that FAT lie about yourself in the article in Feb.09...You wish you had a boyfriend for 5 years, you need to move on with your life and get your head out your ass and move on!! He's MARRIED and HAPPY;)
There are too many gun happy idiots in the police force - St Lucia needs a PROFESSIONAL to run and head up this entity. The person in charge obviously has no control of his workforce and does not care that imbeciles are allowed to run around with guns with no regard for human life. Someone needs to take control this has been going on for far too long!
Another sad day. The loss of a life is never a happy thing but its time to start taking stock. I find it difficult to understand why would police office shoot or kill 'innocent' individuals. Before we cast judgement based on emotion we need to answer some questions. How many of us will turn our criminal relatives over to the cops? None of us will and it is with this same attitude that we address these unfortunate events. We tend to forget the events leading up to the end result. Now I find it hard to believe that the police were following the bike and gave the rider no indication to stop. If the rider was in the process of stopping what indication did he give to the police that he is about to pull over (indicators or tuning signal). We take a lot for granted which usually makes the difference. We cannot blame just the police, both civilians and the police need to be properly educated on proceedures and unless this happens the vicious cycle will continue. I remeber doing the theory test for driving in st lucia which focused on road signs and the process of driving, compared to my driving theory test in the US which focused on laws and behaviors. The police are not the only ones who need to be educated civilians need to be educated on laws and acceptable behaviors as well
