Dear Ambassador,
Permit me to join comrade Earl Bousquet in wishing you a warm welcome to St. Lucia. Let me punctuate this welcome with a warning, which should also serve as a challenge to you. Both Victor and Hugo, your predecessors, had “big boots,” so you have some serious walking to do to keep up, and, like Earl has surmised, to even extend the path they so effectively trod. In the diplomatic field, I had the good fortune and the unforgettable privilege of serving my country, St. Lucia, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later as Head of Mission at St. Lucia’s Embassy in Havana. In that capacity I had the distinct pleasure of working with both Victor and Hugo, so trust me when I tell you that they had big shoes. You will find that St. Lucia is a loving country, with very warm and friendly people. Take your time to get to know Lucians, and you will never regret having set foot in The Helen of the West. Please quickly acquaint yourself with St. Lucian literature. For one of the best insights available into contemporary St. Lucian political history, read Rick Wayne’s three books, "Foolish Virgins," "It’ll Be Alright In The Morning," and "Lapses & Infelicities." These will give you a solid understanding of the politics and St. Lucia’s two political parties. For an insight into the unbelievable kindness and patience of the typical St. Lucian in the face of the high-handed attitude and the treachery of the colonially minded foreigner resident in St. Lucia, read Rudy Gurley’s "Sent from Overseas." For a beautifully crafted and pleasurable introduction to the economic history of St. Lucia, read Dr. Anderson Reynold’s "The Struggle for Survival." For more insights on St. Lucian literature and art, make the acquaintance of Messrs. Mac Donald Dixon and Derek Walcott. Earl can introduce them both to you. I will arrive at your Embassy soon to pay my respects and make your acquaintance. By the way, I am a product of the kind and generous internationalist solidarity of the Cuban Revolution, having read Spanish Language under the auspices of the University of Havana, then graduating from your beautiful Camaguey province 5 years later.
