Papal Mass

Letter from Univision Journalist, Jorge Ramos, to the New Pope

LETTER TO THE NEW POPE:

Well, actually, I do not expect you to read this letter. It would be too much ask. But, well, I must say. The new pope can not -must not- be like Benedict XVI. That would be tragic and dangerous.

The papacy of Benedict XVI, in addition to his extraordinary resignation, will be remembered for covering-up thousands of cases of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests. Benedict XVI was the Pope that remained silent about these crimes and refused to hear the cries asking for transparency within the church.

Therefore, the first thing that I would expect from the new Pope is consistency: if you really are with the victims and the most vulnerable, the least we can expect is to publicly denounce and deliver priests to civil authorities - who, until now, are still being protected by the policy of silence and complicity of the Vatican.

Marcial Maciel was protected by Benedict XVI until his last days. Maciel was the monster founder of the Catholic "Legionaries of Christ", responsible for numerous sex crimes in Mexico. Hopefully the new pope will not do the same with Benedict XVI. The fact that the ex-Pope, being 85 years old, wants a life of prayers is very respectable. But, if he covered up pedophile priests as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (1981-2005) and later as pope, then he has to appear before the courts. And the new pope should help this possible and make justice

Yes, this argument is almost laughable. An ex-Pope on trial. It seems impossible. But it is a historic, moral, and Christian opportunity. If John Paul II and Benedict XVI blessed and led the operation of protecting thousands of pedophile priests, then the new Pope should take advantage with the victims of these crimes and let a healthy distance from his predecessors.

No immunity, no impunity for Joseph Ratzinger.

An Ex-Catholic

I wrote as an ex-Catholic surrounded by Catholics. Decades ago, I lost faith and live very well, thank you. But I can not stand to see an authority figure like the Pope, and one of the most powerful institutions in history, the Vatican, abuse their position and stand above the law.

Do not believe the Pope is infallible. In his last 'Angelus' as Pope in St. Peter's Square, Benedict said "the word of God is pointed to me, the Lord calls me to dedicate myself more to prayer." What a pity that during his papacy, God did not call on him to make the official documents of the church public showing evidence of thousands of unappealable child rape cases committed by priests worldwide.

That was a big mistake.

It is ironic that an institution like the Catholic Church, which prohibits sex to their leaders, are so concerned about regulating what other people do in bed. The refusal to fully integrate gays into the church is a clear demonstration of discrimination and prejudice. That inequity extends, also, to women.

There is no instruction of Jesus Christ to prevent women from becoming priests. The decision to not allow the ordination of women is something after death. Centuries. In the year 494, Pope Gelasius and more recently, in May 1984, John Paul II stated in an apostolic letter: "I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer so priestly ordination on women and this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church's faithful."

Letter from Univision Journalist, Jorge Ramos, to the New Pope

LETTER TO THE NEW POPE:

Uncomfortable topics

Celibacy is also a decision made by the church long time ago after the death of Christ. If priests want sex, it is better than they do it with their wives and not with minors. That change is urgent.

I know that there is no consensus for the Catholic Church to accept abortion, that is, the right of any woman to do with her body whatever she wants. But banning the use of condoms in the age of AIDS is quite backwards and deadly. A change of church guidelines on the use of condoms in Africa would have prevented many deaths and suffering in recent decades. That's an example of how an authoritarian and irrational order of the church produces death.

It would be tragic if the new Pope is as stated above. He defended those above and those who were with him but those who are under him, children and their families were abused. He sent the wrong message: defend the priests and cover them just because they are priests.

If the new pope is like the previous one this would be dangerous. First because he would continue extending a policy of immunity to religious criminals worldwide. And second because his rejection to the gay rights and equality within the church could continue, promoting a discriminatory culture and rejection to diversity. This has enormous consequences outside of the Catholic Church.

In the meantime, I hope that the new Pope listens. And dares to be the moral leader that Benedict XVI never dared to be.

To have held that just around carnival time would be most ideal. What do you think?

Oh Allah, Please accept the prayer of your Prophet Noah from me against this abomination called the Roman Catholic Church?

------

Noah said: My Lord! Lo! they have disobeyed me and followed one whose wealth and children increase him in naught save ruin; (21)

And they have plotted a mighty plot, (22)

And they have said: Forsake not your gods. Forsake not Wadd, nor Suwa', nor Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr. (23)

And they have led many astray, and Thou increasest the wrong-doers in naught save error. (24)

Because of their sins they were drowned, then made to enter a Fire. And they found they had no helpers in place of Allah. (25)

And Noah said: My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers in the land. (26)

If Thou shouldst leave them, they will mislead Thy slaves and will beget none save lewd ingrates. (27)

My Lord! Forgive me and my parents and him who entereth my house believing, and believing men and believing women, and increase not the wrong-doers in aught save ruin. (28)
