Wrong.
Rome was not barcaric.
Rome fought the barbarians.
Rome conquered Europe with the sword (great military skills), the balance (justice system) and the cross (Christianity).
Laws we have in St. Lucia are based on the British Law which is based on the Roman Civil Law.
I refuse to imagine what was happening in the Caribbean at the same time Romans introduced the rule of law throughout Europe (Middle East and northern Africa).
Perhaps Caribs eating the Arawaks, or the other way round.
There is no point in glorifying the locals when they didn't do anything of importance for the world, or we will be suspect of deliriums.
What matters is the contribution a country or some peoples brought to civilization.

Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar, the Romans said.

The Caribs were not canibals, they were wariors. They killed the Europeans because the white man was raping their women, killing their men, brought diseases and doing all sorts of bad things to them. Remember Colombus' men were all jail birds.

So to justify their actions they went back and said that the caribs were canibals. Colombus was a bloody liar, hope he has discovered that hell is really, really hot but he's in good company down there so he'll be alright.

Caribs warriors?
What were they fighting for?
Mangoes or dasheene?

History would have been better served if they had been thinkers, not stone age fighters ...

Do you justify the atrocities done by the white man and what do you have against the natives. How would like if somebody comes, kill your people and take away your land and home?

Do you also justify slavery, you must be white, defending the actions of your ancestors but on the other hand it was blacks who sold their own people for mere seashells to the white man.

Rome has brought order to primitive Europe.
Before the Romans, barbaric peoples from Far East were devastating Europe almost every year (especially Eastern Europe), while the Germans, French and English were all fighting among themselves, tribe against tribe.
Rome showed them that a greater power is needed to calm them down.

Rome introduced, not without pains, the civil liberties we all enjoy today.
It is very difficult to change peoples who steal, lie, fight and kill into people who live and work peacefully together.

The role Rome played in history is already set in stone, and can be contested only by uninitiated persons.

It's hard to believe that someone in St. Lucia could find an argument against Rome, for an historic truth that is valid for the past 2000 years.

Lucians have committees in every village and they manage it up to the best they can.
If the quality of villagers is bad, what they will do will be bad, if villagers are up to standard, then they will act differently.
Lots of Lucians return home from overseas and, by their very presence, improve the community they live in.
