We do better under the UWP. Labour doesn't care about education. Never have never will.

The scores for the core subjects are a definite area of concern. Hoping to hear what strategies will be employed to address these low scores.

What does UWP and SLP have to do with cxc.Seriously! What do you want the ministers to do ? go to students homes and teach them? how about parents play a role in the children education? we as a nation have a responsibilty it's not all about Government. Children nowadays have everything under thier belt to succeed. Internet etc. Stop blaming Government and start taking responsibility for our actions.

Universal secondary education has proven to be detrimental to our education system. To this date no goverment had addressed this problem. We cannot continue to have children entering a secondary school unable to read and write and expect miracles. This is a fact. Every year student in the Primary schools are tested using the Minimum standard exam at grade 2 and 4. These test reveal the strenghts and weaknesses of the students. What is done with this information. The resources in the poor perfoming schools are also woefully inadequate. We need to get serious St. Luica abut education no matter which party is in power.

Look at the statistics; then answer your own question.

Universal Secondary Education (USE) was a positive step for education in St. Lucia. The problem with this policy was that it was poorly implemented. The deficiencies in the primary system were never addressed prior to the implementation of USE, the students were just promoted to a secondary school, so we had universal secondary ACCESS rather than universal secondary education.

Secondly, the mentality of the teachers in the system needed to be changed, and this still hasn't been done. The teachers are used to teaching the top 60% of students and not the bottom 40%. They are ill equipped and ill prepared to teach students who may have significant learning disabilities.

The lower performing schools are all filled with lower performing students (based on Common entrance). That leads to the schools being stigmatized (which is not new) and little motivation to succeed from both staff and students. It is not easy to teach in a place that is perceived to be a 5 year holding tank for students.

Although both parties had talked about implementing USE it was formally implemented by SLP. The UWP had plenty of criticism about the implementation (rightfully so) but during their 5 years in power they did not change anything about USE. They did not touch it!

So, the education system like most things at home is in a mess. The potential for USE to positively immpact the system has been missed. Every year we have these poor performances particularly at the primary school level, yet nothing is done to remedy that.

The current Minister of Education is a former educator and though he has the passion, he may lack the strength to seriously rock the boat and upright a sinking ship.

So in essence, both political parties have failed the education system in St. Lucia through their misguided, hurriedly implemented policies and their inability and lack of action in fixing the problems that have existed for donkey years. In the meantime, the dropout rate is increasing, and we have students leaving secondary schools who can barely spell their names. The blame game continues while the children suffer. But, this is St. Lucia where we are happy :)

Want solutions?

1. Do what works, and continue to do what has worked before.

2. Don't do what is done in the UNITED STATES. The system of public education in the United States is a grave dug in quicksand; all who model after it only go DOWN, DOWN, DOWN!

I'm sick and tired of St.Joseph's Convent placing 1,2,3 EVERY SINGLE BLESSED!!! time. It's time for another school to come out on top and show those pompous b****** that they're not the best. Seriously, it gets me on my nerves to see them walk in their white shoes as if they're some holy saints but I'm telling you they're not. A lot of nasty things go on behind those closed doors. Girls kissing each other and fingering each others pus*** and shit like that. Masturbation and A LOT of Porn happens there. The name of the school has a "Saint" in it but I personally think there's a devil living somewhere in that old building.
