Making "independence" buy food for me from the supermarket is one hundred million times more important to me than all the crap you up there talking about.

Peel 2 green bananas, 2 whole green onions, a fresh medium fish head-washed with 1/2 lime, 2 garlic cloves, i up pigeon peas, medium heat then simmer with i/2 cup coconut milk (grated from a dry coconut (low to medium heat simmering covered- voila a rich dinner using fresh local products-no supermarket prices in the equation

If you live in the suburbs -you can grow most of this recipe -the fish head you can pick up at low cost. article read it slowly-think children as the precious legacy of your current "existence
There is usually enough protein, calcium etc to meet minimum dail requirement of protein too- Trick is low heat -covered-simmered to preserve the goodies.

For dessert please revisit the article-think children -a nations purest legacy for its continuity-

Your angst has a a hint of musk aromatics-so here's another thought as you read the article again- why is the international rule " Women and children first" during any disaster evacuations e.g., Titanic?

Talking independence to fools, you meant?

As the statue forever will symbolize, what we have been fooled to believe in, is not really independence but a piece of paper as hoisted in the air by the one person who saw an opportunity and grasped it. Cape Diem! He came. He saw. He conquered.

Only the young children wearing blinders as those who can be fed and brainwashed with sanitized information can be fooled about this. Those who lived through the events leading to the British paper abandonment of part of its "Cost of Empire" and/or went on to university are educated about the difference.

Saint Lucians cannot be helped. They are conditioned to accepting abandonment as independence. Perception is reality. It works. Just like in the decline of the Roman Empire, the masses and the plebs are kept entertained. It is obvious for us as in the last set of people creating a caricature that passed for a government, the barbarians are already well within the gates.

@ 5: 37 with a civic sense of civility- the COST you refer to is quite complex ( quelling armed resistance in large colonies like India, Nigeria etc. Military operations ALWAYS devour budget, left / socialist leaning superpowers heat up the debate at the UN for the end of colonialism and or they will support states that ask them with arms , etc e.g., Angola, Cuba,Erithera etc. Islands like St> Lucia with an agro economy that can are handed off more because of superpower competition from Russia than abandon as you asserted. After all keeping St. Lucia under imperial economic monopoly is profitable for Gt Britain I can covet its green gold (bananas , as my own private garden with controls over wages -shipping contracts etc. I can make it a tourist mecca for frozen citizens and others with my controls on what airlines, cruises etc. You see where I am going with my point of view? And you know that greatest keepers of financial ledgers are the British-bar none.

So while I agree with you that Victoria's empire had to be sliced up I disagree with your reason stated. UN mandates orchestrated by Russia's growing global influence with amplification from China -had more to do with it than the reason you stated.

After all colonies are monopolies like casinos -the house never loses

@ 3:58 Hole in the mouth comment. The comments of cubs whose fantasy is to dislodge the "Old Grey Wolf" from its position around the "Council Fire" are not usually responded to

But granted that its Independence anniversary - I promised your mother "Helen" that I will be altruistic for the sake of her wayward rascal sons onbce a year.

It is obvious from your hate the classics but be a slave to current fashion- that you are powerfully tranced /traumatized
by the RAP HIP HOP minstrels of urban metropolis in western nations

Seriously, baby, earlier generations who have been around all the blocks , tenements, subways, freeways of the UK-USA -Canada France -Sweden -Belgium- Germany et al may not have fallen in or swayed by the cultural DISSONANCE (please look that one up- it has bth sociological and psychological implications in a variety of contexts)

Intergenerational 101- You feign mockery at your elders using western obsession with the new and youth as the lure of consumerism- as justification- YET

THE CULTURE that St. Lucia coos to for EMPATHY is one in which RESPECT for earlier generations is even ENSHRINED in their GREATES TRADITION -THE LUNAR NEW YEAR

CHina -the orient ST Lucias current ROCK of economic support BELIEVES in the respectful superiority over cubs-

So baby your CONTRIVED HUMOR really shows you naked hypocrisy.

Go back to FECESBOOK or TWATTER and leave serious brainstorm blogging to the grown ups.

@ first comment " make independence buy food for mew at the supermarket

A strong reliance on state sponsored WELFARE is implied by your statement.

A reliance on IMPORTED basic products is also implied- Why not buy fresh food a t a local market or from a farmer.

When you buy the more expensive imported food with all its EXTRA SALT OR SUGAR you are creating jobs for rich nations.

When you buy local fresh food you are supporting SAINT LUCIA-Nuff said!

@4:14 AM, you have obviously missed the point of placing the word independence in quotation marks. To the initiated, when this is done, the word clearly does not mean, connote or denote the everyday dictionary meaning. One should therefore go beyond the obvious to get total or a better understanding of what is meant.

Far from its everyday meaning, I take the word in quotes to mean that the writer intended that independence should work for us, Saint Lucians to enable all Saint Lucians to put food on the table. We, Saint Lucians have been conditioned to remain tribal and expect handouts and political crumbs from the tables of our party bosses.

Next, it does not appear that your criticism embraces a vision where one day local commerce will have developed beyond the largely peasant exchanges in the 'Saturday' market places beyond a 'flea market' or tray by the market business model. Alright. Our education system is not driven by such entrepreneurial concerns.

J Q Charles and Super J, for all the admiration of a few, never grew, nor established a powerful local brand of anything. Does that tell you anything?

Before you get lost any further in the sauce, a monopoly, natural monopoly as in a water-supply company, or a legal monopoly as with a patent, or however otherwise created, does not represent a brand as such. It only means that you have a captive clientele with no where else to go for an alternative supply of the market offering. In other words, you, as a consumer are stuck. Take it or leave it, at that price.
