Black Sigatoka could be a blessing in disguise

The author flirts with the problem but again refuses to confront the issue directly.
1/We import food we can grow ourselves
2/ We pay a premium for it because of shipping costs.
3/ This has a net negative effect on our foreign balance of payments, money leaves the Island.
4/ We lose jobs from domestic market.

The alternative is we foster domestic agriculture to produce high value crops that we consume here.

The profit margin on vegetables vastly exceeds that of bananas. Lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, citrus, can all be grown at a high quality level here.
Keep the jobs on island, keep the valuable foreign exchange on island, build local economy.

IMPORT SUBSTITUTION... the low hanging fruit of agricultural production

Is the author in fact saying that Mosa, the black sigatoka, is good for banana/agriculture? Well, think again. Even Cas Elias was a better minister of agriculture.
