ALVA CAN TALK ALL HE WANT. WHAT THEY AFRAID OF IS THE CREATION OF JOBS THAT COME ELECTION COULD MAKE MAKE KENNY ANTHONY DISSAPPEAR!

So true blogger #1.

Although it's all too apparent that the UWP is doing a very poor job, the blah-blah of both the SLP and the new boys on the block, the LPM, aren't offering any better plans or solutions. In fact, the LPM is already looking the worst of all three, for example, their leader writes an article that appears in the Voice and ONLY his followers write in blogs stating how wonderful he and his ideas are. Come on, just how stupid do these politicians think we 'ordinary' people are? - no answer is required; by now, we all know too well they think we are a bunch of fools!

St Lucia had better go ahead with the Hewanorra redevelopment project IMMEDIATELY otherwise even 'under-developed' St Vincent will leave us far behind. Remember, Hewanorra has TWO runways. This is ideal for a regional hub; neither Barbados nor St Vincent has this possibility!

The bottom line is that every nation needs something(s) with which to earn revenues. The only thing the Caribbean islands have - especially the smaller islands - is tourism. At this point in our history if St Lucia lets slip its special advantage - currently, the world is in love with our natural beauty - we will really go to the dogs, and worse!

Alva just talking crap. 2 million passengers my ass. When i landed in UVF in December they were 3 flights on the ground and the immigration lines were almost outside on the ramp. If the airport only brings in 500,000 pax a year so far imagine the 2 million that fool dreaming about. Hewanorra needs to be redeveloped, they need a parallel taxiway. They need more lines for check in. The waiing area is is too msall ( although just last year it was expanded). I think he is afraid that it gives so many people jobs in the south. Any airport project would need a lot of labourers and stuff, so that in it self is economic stimulus.

Of course, many of us are paranoic about funds being stolen from the project, however, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place because which ever party would be in power - the UWP, SLP, or the LPM - any of these guys would try to line their deep pockets with as many embezzelment schemes and bribes as they can contrive.

Unfortunately, stealing is one of human's lowest instincts and putting temptations in our way is a test VERY FEW of us would ever pass, politicians least of all. They live and dream of major projects like this one falling into their hands. That's precisely why if it has not been done already, an independent - preferably international - legal agency/tribunal needs to be promptly put in place to avoid this kind of corruption from occurring. This is done all the time when such large community projects are initiated, but first a St Lucian watchdog group needs to be set up by a diverse collection of concerned and trustworthy citizens.

So why are they creating jobs just before an election? I welcome jobs for the populace but we should be careful not to play politics, as we do, with people's livelihoods.

They are all the same: six of one, half dozen of the other.

i cant wait to come home an greeted by such modern facility ever since i was a child i dreamed thatthis would come i remember my dad taking me vigie to watch the planes. fathers like my self can pass that on at a airport like this i could see the taxi way an both run ways an much of vigie traffic happening a hewanorra plus air cargo. just like the tunnel the filling of swamps for housing an when we decide to build the highway from castries to vf straight road they will say no to it as well

Alva Baptiste should be taking issue with the affordability of such a project, the financing mechanism and to what extent it places an onerous fiancial responsibility on the backs of St. Lucians, and visitors alike.

It would seem that the entire airport needs to be revamped since he mentioned several critical sections of the airport that needs rehabilitation. If a cost benefit analysis was carried out the result would suggest building a new terminal instead of rehabiliting sections as he is suggesting.

Providing jobs for the unemployed is one of the main responsibilities of any government so those of you who claim that the SLP is afraid that UWP will be able to garner votes on the account of the airport project may be unto something but trust me a lot of people would look at the government's overall performance before they make that ecision at the ballot box, or so I hope.

This government has not had a stellar record of governance and the passe political tactic of a few days of work just before an election will no longer work.

Who cares if the UWP upgrades Hewanorra for political reasons as long as the island gets what it desperately needs for its development. This grand airport project will do as much for St Lucia's growth - if not more - as the Gros Islet causeway and swamp clearance project did for us 35-plus years ago.

The next two vital projects St Lucia MUST carry out are (1) build the partial-tunnel highway from Castries to Hewanorra to convert that journey's travel-time into a 30 min. drive and (2) close down the Vigie airport and use all that good beach land for hotel developments and more important purposes. St Lucia does not need two airports - that was merely an old-fashioned small-island misconception.

We need to bare in mind that the reason all these major infrastructural projects have to be understaken now and by ourselves is because Britain treated ALL its colonies is a very shoddy manner. If we don't address our many infrastructural inadequacies right now, we will be doomed to remain among the backwaters of civilization.

@above...no tourists or visitors will come to a crime ridden and infested island (St Lucia) because of modern infrastructures.

The money should better be spent on fighting and eliminating crimes - realistically.

The prime minister could start, #1, on his six point plan, by getting rid of the criminals within his cabinet.

I guess Alva's plan did not fly either. What a sad state of affairs. Our politicians are drained of ideas. I can tell by the responses in here.

Mr. 'realistically' above:
1. Whereas most financial institutions will make a loan of $500,000,000 to St Lucia to finance our airport improvements, NONE OF THEM would make that kind of money available to St Lucia to finance our war against crime. Think about it, Would they?
2. The infrastructure St Lucia desperately needs is not for the tourists - this is just wrong thinking. This infrastructure is required for St Lucia's own development - plus, St Lucians needs work that pays good salaries.
3. The improved airport will bring between 1,500 and 2,000 direct jobs to St Lucia and generate at least 10,000 more jobs indirectly -please do some careful research on this subject!
4. The Israeli-American
'war and crime-experts' will be here soon and the island's current crime-killing spree will be over within less than a year because most of our home-grown killers will be DEAD by then - they had better start writing their wills right away!
5. Hewanorra's improvements will not be ready for another one-and-a-half to two years, therefore, both things, getting rid of the killers and improving the economy, have to be executed simultaneously - there is no way of getting around that dilemma; it's not a matter of doing one or the other.
6. Crime does not keep tourists away that much, because most tourist developments try to be exclusive, i.e., separate from the 'natives.' Mostly, the tourist don't come to see us, they come for our tropical beaches and sunshine. This is also connected with why the Israelis and Americans will be coming to 'clean up our streets:'they are coming to protect the big dollars they have invested in our hotel and travel industry. Most people don't know this, but right now the Caribbean is know as the 'New Riviera' for the better-off Americans and Europeans - they began planning this about 50 years ago, so believe me, they are not going to let a bunch of locals that they consider 'savages' spoil their plans.
NOW, THIS IS REALITY!

Just because of madness the locals will have to pay and additional $35 USD and 10 - 30 English Pounds more to go home to St.Lucia.

A ticket to Japan,Singapore,Thailand and Honk Kong is cheaper.

Plus there are more action and site seeing things to do.

St.lucia is just about to be a thing of the past for Europe tourist.

Coconut water I can drink at will, beaches are great plus very clean,Party is on top of the world and sea food as fresh as ever in the Far east.

My money have long pant and crime is low, what do I need crazy st.lucia for ?

Build your airport and let your local people pay for it. A flight to any caribbean Island is going to cost an added $35 USD.

My wife will just show up when her mum is dead for the service.

My kids donot care to much about St.Lucia because of the phones calls from their grandma about the crime wave.

Poor old lady I feel so bad for her and it is so late in her life we just can not have her here in London. She does not want to make the trip to stay.

This a country now run by mad men,This place was sweet loving place to be Under John Compton.

What a shame??? The last time I was in St.Lucia in 2005 all look good, people were happy, the city moving,it was just all fun.

I have been told by my mother in law it is all madness now with gun fire. No work for people.

She miss her daddy Compton,She said she will not vote.

I hope something good will happen to St.Lucia but it must be the people to make the change.

Where is the alternative proposal, there was nothing in the article to say so. the facts are they want to do the airport that is what is upsetting and viggie should be closed it cost the country too much money.

I don't want to see the UWP return to power, but the prospect of having anuses like Alva Baptiste as my Deputy Prime Minister scares the crap outta me. Is this the best Alva can come up with with his much acclaimed Masters in Aviation?

It's frightening that even after Tomas, the King Adminstration is not prepared to consider a scaled-down version of its airport redevelopment plan. Saint Lucia does not have the rooms to justify such a grand plan. The overcrowding at Hewanorra happens at specific times of the day and on weekends. For about 50% of the time Hewanorra is underutilized. Vigie is also underutilized. It would make sense if Vigie is closed to fill the gap at Hewanorra, but not even that is being considered. What if we get another lash from another hurricane this year? What if the recovery from the global recession stalls and tourists stop coming? Already we are losing market share and this has nothing to do with the current state of the airport? What if Cuba suddenly changed its policies and the sanctions placed on it by the Americans are removed? What if the Americans and the British place travel advisories on us because of uncontrolled crime? What if SLASPA can't raise enough revenue to repay the loan for the airport project? What if SLP wins the next election? What will Kenny do about the airport project?
