We have talent in St. Lucia. We have some facilities, a lot has to be done in terms of the management of the facilities and access to those facilities. In some cases we have knowledgeable coaches. For example, in track and field we have more certified coaches than we know what to do with.

Part of the problem is the administration of some of these associations. Some of these people have no imagination, they keep doing the same things year after year and expecting different results. They also do not consult enough with their members on the best way forward for their associations.

Very little is done to keep our athletes in the fold when they leave home (particularly track athletes). When these athletes leave home, they are treated as if they don't belong anymore. There is no liaison to keep in contact with the athletes. Even if they keep in touch with their coaches/clubs, the association should have someone to maintain contact with the athletes.

St.Lucians don't know what it takes to be successful at this level. They believe anyone can go to the Olympics and win a medal. Being successful with mediocre effort and performance is a way of life in St. Lucia and so they believe it pertains to the rest of the world. As a result, they are not prepared to provide the support necessary for athletes to meet their true potential. Look at Lavern Spencer, one of the best high jumpers in the Caribbean and many people have written her off because she hasn't medalled at the Olympics. While I wish she would have medalled, I understand that she is competing against the best athletes in the world and many of them have jumped higher than her. Again, we don't understand what it takes to be successful at that level.

Yes, crowd support is helpful to athletes who are performing. Just because St. Lucian athletes may be performing on a foreign track does not mean they do not have crowd support. The rest of the world appreciates talent whether or not it's their own.

We know the problems we have in sports in St. Lucia. These problems have been around for a long time. We just don't have the will to do what it takes to solve these problems.
