Labour are such hypocrites. What was all the big fuss all about? You all have not done anything different from what the UWP would have done? Games and more games is what is going on.

what i do not like and thats why i NEVER VOTED IN THIS DAMN COUNTRY... THAT IF A PREVIOUS GOV. STARTED A PROJECT SO IMPORTANT LIKE A NEW INTL TERMINAL..Y WOULD A GOV WHO WON ELECTIONS SCRAP IT TO START THE WHOLE PROCESS OVER .. u would think its their money.. u know.. i mean its true UWP.. may have had some under the carpet dealings in the HIA..redevlopment project but come on ... I AM ANGRY AT SLP .. I MAY PREFER THEM BUT THEY UPSET ME DAMN IT... i mean even if an airport cost close to $400 MILLION EC dollars...

i mean all airports all over the world are heavily financed and the good thing is ALL AIRPORTS ARE SELF SUSTAINING IN REPAYMENTS OF THEIR LOANS... AIRPORTS PAYS FOR ITSELF .. so SLP have no damn excuse to say that crap the airport is too expensive..and the island need to focus on the EAST COAST ROAD CRAP..LUCIAN PPL ARE SO BACKWARD.. JUST LIKE TO MINE PPL BIZ BUT WHEN IT COMES TO IMPORTANT ECONOMIC INTERESTS..THEY PLAY DUMB.. I believe it will Take 40 YRS from now for that kind of crap politics ends..when these younger generations will be more educated and intolerant of crappy decisions by sitting gov officials

Thanks Micah,
Obviously the bloggers ahead have so much noise in their heads that they fail to read your article and understand the blueprint for the way forward.
Thanks once again for the clarification, and for me... the edification.

Even if the project is back on, why is the Airport Development Charge of $35US still being charged when it is still in the conception stage. Surely, the travelling public should not have to pay a tax for something that may or may not ever happen. It is not like they will ever get this money refunded.

Remember how Alva criticize the Airport project, Alva Baptiste is Laborie's biggest JACK ASS.

Why do away with the tax; only to re-implement later?

Because one cannot be paying for something that does not exist. What if the project never begins? How then do you justify collecting this money? Therefore, in my opinion I agree that the collection of this tax should continue after the project starts.

Since the introduction of this airport tax I have travelled six times which means I have paid US$210.00 for a proposed redevelopment of the airport. Ta date no work have started and there is still no date to commence this project. Now how can this be fair? How can the authorities justify collecting money for a project that does not even have a financier? It was clearly stated in the article that the bank identified to undertake the financing of the project withdrew itself. Therefore, I believe that the authorities should have settled these matters before they started collecting money. I have no problem paying the money as soon as the project starts.

As of today’s date (October 26th 2012) the cost of a ticket on LIAT for a round trip from St Lucia to Barbados is $388.99 USD. Out of this total $179.02 is tax of which the St Lucia leg accounts for $122.00 USD. Now how can anybody complain that LIAT ticket prices are too high when our own government is charging us an additional $35.00USD for a development which does not exist? Like others have said, why not collect the tax when the project starts? Therefore I have no problems with this administration suspending the collection of the redevelopment tax until the projects starts.

The tax should be removed until the project has commenced. Otherwise who knows what the money is going to be for. There is no way for travelers to get the airport development charge back. Also doesnt this ADC reduce Caribbean travel since it makes up a greater percentage of the total ticket cost.

It is much better to have airline passengers, inclucding tourists, finance the renovation of our international airport than to have the St.Lucian taxpayer carry that burden by himself.
So even if it's not time to start the project, keep collecting the tax away; but make sure the project comes to fruition within a resonable time.

i must agree with anon..3:21 pm..even if departure tax is collected and there is no project to start with.. whats wrong in saving that money to finance the project itself when it does commence... most likely this project may start several months after the 2014 budget.. so we looking at almost 2 yrs from now if we lucky..

i have no prob suspending the xtra tax travellers pay on departure tax.. but if the SLP GOV was really serious about suspending the TAX.. they could have done it either on december 1st 2011 after they had won election or soon after the 2012 budget.. but they realise the gov can amass $10million USD..this yr alone.. makes u wonder why they always play politics..with our lucian masses..

Betta Dazs Ahed said... Small correction, airports are supposed to pay for themselves, and most do like in Barbados, Antigua, Trinidad, etc., St. Lucia is too small to be running two airports; you will be surprised to know that the airports are not both profitable: not in St. Lucia. Vigie should be closed, and roads upgraded to get to Viewx Fort.

It is preventing St. Lucia from being a hub. When people travelling to other places land in Vieux Fort they do not want to travel to Vigie to connect to go to St. Vincent, etc. So they fly via Barbados. Vigie is hurting us.
