VAT: its impact on the nation - a personal perspective!

The various rates of VAT is an abnormal way of implementing the tax.

This type of discrimination will hurt the average taxpayer who sees differential treatment to certain sectors.

It violates one of the basic principles for the introduction of a VAT which is to provide a uniform rate to all sectors and all economic units.

This hodge-podge approach will impact the minds of some to the extent that they too deserve an 8 percent rate.

This all points to the absolute lack of creativity, innovation, and spattering of knowledge of economics on the part of the main actors of this administration.

There is little solace in the fact that John Compton's errand boy as Minister of Finance, with the bare equivalent of a high-school education, would have done much worse!
