Peterkin, an Economist.? That's the problem in St. Lucia, overnight the baker becomes a hear surgeon.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King.

Excuse me, I meant a [heart] Surgeon.

Blogger above, he's articulate and often makes sense. Although he swears he's an optimist, an accountant is by no means an economist. By their nature, accountants/auditors find fiscal loopholes and attempt to remedy or block them by recommending cutbacks and other austerity measures. They may know how to stop the hemorrhaging but are hardly the ones to turn to for advice on how to grow a failing economy. Not sure why we tend to mistake every Math whiz or former International Relations professor for an economic consultant in these parts.

These misfits are tolerated because the vast majority of the people are first unwilling (or else they would make it part of their informal education) or second disinterested in matters related to the proper functioning of government. In fact, after having cast a vote win or lose in terms of the party they support, most Saint Lucians are just counting on wether or not they will retain their existing jobs or contacts or will gain new ones in a party turnover.

Growth or economic growth (englargening the existing economic pie so that more and more people can benefit) does not surface in conversations. So we continue to catch our royals feeling either peeved or not because governments are only concerned in catering to the party faithful. Every time we call an election a large segment of the population can expect to get screwed. Genuine jackass misfits pop up as leaders doing jackass things that hurt rather than help.

The Peterkins of St. Lucia are only happy as long as governments can borrow enough so they can clean off their bit as FEES . They are not interested in future bankruptcy of the country or hardship of the people ! Lol !

SOLUTION

Notice that our protagonists in the wage dispute are not bringing up actions taken by other Caribbean countries.

When it suits him Kenny is always ready to find ‘facts’ relating to other Caribbean countries that fit with his meme at the moment.

In Bermuda Cabinet members have taken a symbolic 10% pay cut. In Jamaica public servants have agreed a wage freeze.

Solution to the Impasse.

(1) Just as in Burmuda the Cabinet of Ministers and the high flying politically appointed party hack Hambassadors should take a 20% salary cut .Good for the goose , good for the gander!

(2) The political consultants should be fired. Give them a 3 -6 month grace period and they are out. They are a burden on the pressured taxpayer and we are borrowing money to pay their salaries.

(3) Public servants should then accept the 4% offered by government with a signed promise to renegotiate immediately that certain criteria are met in government’s fiscal performance levels.

To date the hypocracy of this government has been apalling even for the dupliceteous Kenny, Tony and Phillip.
