Teaching: A Noble But Historically Disrespected Profession

A very well presented article David. Your argument is well placed and this is evidenced by my personal departure from the education system of St. Lucia 12 years ago after 18 long hard years of dedicated service in all stages of the St. Lucia education system. Upon departure from the St. Lucia education system, I was a headteacher for four years. I have now been serving the people of the UK as a Mathematics Advanced Skills Teacher and sadly, I wish that I could continue to contribute to education in St. Lucia. I am still convinced that the decision makers do not really appreciate the professional and economic value of teachers and still believe that teaching is a vocation and not a profession. I guess some people see a vocation as an excuse to under-pay teachers and therefore capitalize on the willingness and vocation of these dedicated servants to make a contribution to the education of our sons and daughters of St. Lucia.

Well written. As long as teachers continue to put everyone's interest above theirs this will always be a problem. Making the decision to stand up for what you deserve despite the setbacks to others should NEVER be confused with a lack of caring. If you do not know, or cannot show what you are worth, who will?

A well written article and timely in light of the current impasse between the Trade Union Federation and the Government Negotiating Team. We teachers constantly have to fight for everything; be it for student achievements, condition of work and yes salary increases. Some 20 years ago when I joined this noble profession for me like many young person, it was something to dO. Today, I am proud to say that I am a teacher. For me the joy, satisfaction comes from knowing I am and can make a meaningful impact on my students lives. So yes its about time we get the respect we rightfully deserve and that the powers that be stop added to our stress.
