Please!! The only time we in St. Lucia do more than pay lip service to sporting development is when there are major regional or international sporting events.
How many times did Lavern Spencer have to foot her own bills in order to have got to the exposure which as made her what she is today? Yet she never gave anyone else her allegiance. Has Victor Ledgers ever been publicly commended for representing SLU so creditably in so many races? (Yet he would always wrap himself up in a St. Lucian flag after he won).
Why do primary school teachers have to pay rent for the Mindoo Philip Park in order for their students to train/practise running on the tracks before their school sports meets? Constituency representatives are invited to school sporting events, but never show up. A school was in the news a few years ago because the Ministry of Education build a shed on half of its netball court & said that the children could play on half a court(and this is a school with a legacy of producing netballers who go on to represent the nation in regional tournaments).
Successive political administrations have never thought the youth's athletic ability an important enough commodity to allocate sufficient funds towards the implementation of comprehensive sporting programmes, in an effort to try to harness and develop it from an early age ....
So the cycle continues: there'll be much talk about getting more Olympic/CARIFTA, regional/international-standard athletes, but that's all it will be: talk, because the Olympics are still fresh in everyone's minds, ..... wait till next month or so, when the Olympic glow has begun to wear off, then all this talk will be a thing of the past .... till the next Olympic Games .... Only in St. Lucia ....
