well this story has hit the airwaves the whole week what else can i say.. that i am proud that some quarters of society see this as an infringement on the constitution of the country and not as a company's rules and mandates.. so that is good st. lucians are waking up

if lucelec is in total breach of their actions against mrs Vidal then i wish her to gain millions from lucelec so that can learn a lessonn and change their employment contracts to suit religious rights.. not just lucelec but i want this to wake up all other companies who take employees for granted in every way..

lastly it will give employees an incentive to take any company to task if they feel their rights are being breached esp with the passing of the labour lawcode..
its IRONIC that the Min of Labour is also an ADVENTIST.. thats why its dif for any christian to retain his christian principles when you are very hihg up in government.. i dont think anyone is a true christian when they hold powers in the chain of commands in gov..what say you??

Why hasn’t the Minister of Labour made a statement on the issue?

I hope this company is not showing itself up as being arrogant and discriminatory towards its employees.

Is this a one off situation or is the management of the view that they can do what they want to employees.

Who is the manager of that company?

I hope this is resolved as soon as possible.

The project to replace LUCELEC’s current Customer
Information System (CIS), with a more customer centric,
functional system is on target.
 Go‐Live scheduled for mid‐July.

The Go-Live date was Mid-July. If the company needed to work on this project during weekend hours and she was a major player for this project, it is justifiable for the company to ask her to work during that weekend which appears to be allowable from the contract she signed.

Has she always been an Adventist or did she become one while working for Lucelec? If so then why did she not tell Lucelec that she could no longer work on her Sabbath once she adopted the new religion?

If she was an Adventist when she started why did she agree to the contract in the first place?

A weekend consists of both a Sunday and Saturday. I am sure she would have been willing to work on Sunday so why did they not give her that opportunity?

There seems to be a managemenmt issue here with the attitude of the top brass.

Who is the CEO and deputy? Who makes the decisions?

By the way people, she did go to work the saturday night. They were happy with the work done . . . then they turn around and fired her on monday. This is the fact!!!

Isn't it interesting that the Human Resource Manager is a Duboulay? Trevor Louisy, Manager of Lucelec, had better remind that Duboulay lady that "Massa Day Done!" Remember when the Massas, including the Duboulay slave plantation owners, used to whip their slaves? Well if this modern day Duboulay Massa is not careful, she will feel the whip of the Vidals. The Vidals, including soldiers like Karen Vidal, are strong women, who know how to be brave and fight for their rights. Ask Minister Phillip J. Pierre about that Vidal soldier. JACQUOT.

Was that after the first weekend or second weekend?
If she completed the work she was required to do within the required time then surely the company should have been fine with it. If however, her inability to be available at that time meant that the company had to delay their project then they may need to evaluate whether or not she is the best person for this position.

Could you imagine an electrical black-out in your community on a Sunday morning, and all the Catholics and other Sunday worshippers who work for LUCELEC decided to observe their Sunday sabbath? That would be a mess.

Even Jesus, a strict observer of the Sabbath, broke the rule when it was necessary. So if Ms. Vidal's presence was absolutely necessary, she should have made the effort to go to work; after all, the electricity company, like the police department, is a 24/7 organization.

When u hv women in top position tats how they behave>Women are women worst enemy, they always hv an axe to grind with that i will show u who the boss is>thats all she was worth after 21years???Shame on u

First of all, Thinktank, if she wins millions against the company the cost of electricity goes up for all of us.
Secondly, Tomtom, the woman's religion is not in question here so to compare her with catholics, etc makes no sense.
The issue is Employers disrespect for employees rights. There are still to many dinosaur managers in the system who still believe they own the workers - you working FOR me mentality instead of you working WITH me. That kind of disrespect will not go away until we get rid of all the dinosaurs. It will be around for a long time. In the meantime what do we do? We suffer in silence for even the courts are ran by dinosaurs.

to anon 10;08 am-- to get rid of the dinosaurs is not simply by wishing it away ... if she were to win millions and even if our bills were to increase which is illegal by the way.. they the shareholders would fire this dinosaur cause of the fiasco that arised..

we have to set a precedent and if we keep saying the system is broken when can we finally choose to fix it by using the courts when possible cause those biased court officials have their friends etc.. we would never begin a revolution in the labour code that is so badly needed..
Ask yourself why hasnt any UNIONS gone to rep SANDALS 3 RESORTS EMPLOYEES- thats a gold mine to have 1000 employees of sandals baying union fees.. but they prefer not to touch Sandals at all.. the staff at sandals are petrified to join a union..THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN THIS COUNTRY

God wants you to work. Pay bills.

Its interesting that you used sandals as an example. Sandals is a cesspool of exploitation of workers. They overwork these young ladies with shifts as long as 12 hours at a time for slavery wages of $400.00 a week for a 60 hour week.
But nothing can be done about it because
Our politicians accept favours - including free accommodation from sandals for their personal use.
Wake up TT. We are doomed.

So what if she was Jewish? LUCELEC should know better than that.

"So what if she was Jewish? LUCELEC should know better than that."
-------------------------------------------------------------
Most of my co-workers in the accounting firm here in New York are Jewish, and therefore observe the Saturday sabbath; but during the busy tax season - January thru April - they all come to work on Saturdays when asked to.

This lady has worked there for 21 years and in all that time, she has never been asked to work on a Saturday or has been able to work around that. One time she's required to work on a Saturday and she can't do that? Her contract that she signed does require her to work on a Saturday. If she joined this religion after she signed this contract, then she should have tried to have it amended in some way where she would not be required to work on a weekend. This is a breach of the contract that she signed. If she signed a contract saying she would get paid $10 a week and the company only paid her $5 then they would have breached the contract, what's the difference here? After 21 or so years of not working on a weekend after your contract says that you may be required to and now you're complaining?

@ ABOVE WHO SAY THIS LADY WAS WORKING 4 THE COM'4 21YRS?

The article in the Editorial section of this paper stated that the lady had worked with Lucelec for 21 years and has been an Adventist for 19.
